Can I Buy Polars for My Boat?

Other ways to get polars

If you have polars for your boat acquired from one of the services that make these, great. You probably don't need this article (assuming you find them accurate). If you have a multi thousand dollar instrumentation system tied to an onboard computer, you probably don't' need this article. If, on the other hand you don't have a set of polars, or if your polars do not take into consideration the skill of your crew, or the sea state, and you don't have fancy instruments (or even if you do), then this article can help you go faster upwind. The same principles apply downwind and I may add that in the future.

You can buy polars for some of the more popular boats. I have not done that as my boat is not in that category and being old and wood, probably will never be.

How to buy polars

To get these polars your boat or a sister ship needs an ORR or IMS rating. Then for a few hundred dollars, you can purchase a package that includes the polars. As of the time I wrote this article, I found This Link to the US Sailing page

If you use the method on this site, you will not need to purchase polars, you can make your own. You will get the benefit of knowing the optimum sailing angle and speed for your given conditions in easy to understand graphs without polars. The point is, you don't need polars, you need to know how to sail your boat fast, and that is the problem I am trying to solve.
