DISCUSSION
Issued at 430 AM EDT Fri Mar 29 2024
Clear, breezy and pleasant conditions prevail along the Florida Keys on this early Friday morning, with radars detecting no precipitation across the region. Temperatures along the island chain are in the upper 60s to near 70, with dewpoints in the upper 50s, and winds on land from the north at 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts. Surface analysis depicts the cold front that moved through the Keys on Thursday now located over the central Bahamas and central Cuba, with high pressure extending from the Tennessee Valley into the central Gulf of Mexico. Aloft, a deep mid-latitude trough is swinging through the Northeastern states and offshore over the western Atlantic, while upstream ridging builds over the Southern Plains. The 00Z Key West sounding sampled a very dry and stable airmass, with strong inversions based near 2000 and 6000 feet, and PW of only 0.65 inches (below the 10th percentile for the date). More recent MIMIC-TPW satellite imagery shows an even drier airmass, with estimated PWs around one half inch, pushing southward across the SE Gulf and the Keys.
Today will see sunny and pleasant conditions, with the very dry and stable airmass precluding any shower activity. Gusty NNE winds this morning will veer to the ENE and decrease this afternoon as the overnight density surge off the mainland dissipates. High temps should reach the upper 70s, with dewpoints holding in the upper 50s.
Dry weather with a gradual warming trend will prevail through the weekend and into early next week, as a ridge aloft moves slowly eastward across the Gulf of Mexico, while the surface high shifts slowly eastward from the Florida peninsula into the western Atlantic. This slow-moving pattern over the CONUS will be anchored by an upstream cutoff low which will ease down the California coast during the weekend and move into the desert Southeast early next week. Temps will be near normal through the weekend (highs near 80 and lows near 70), then climb a few degrees above normal early next week as our low-level flow veers to the ESE. Dewpoints in the upper 50s to lower 60s through the weekend will provide very pleasant outdoor conditions.
Heading into the middle of next week, guidance is in rather good agreement, with a piece of western trough ejecting eastward across the Plains States and Ohio Valley. This pushes yet another late season cold front southward across Florida, with the front passing through the Keys Wednesday night. The strength of this next front remains uncertain at this time, although current indications are that it will not be especially strong. For now, have made very little change to the previous forecast, with slight rain chances from Wednesday through Thursday. We have lowered temps a few degrees for Thursday in line with the latest GFS/EC/NBM guidance.
MARINE
Issued at 430 AM EDT Fri Mar 29 2024
Overnight observations show northerly winds of 20 to 23 knots along the reef and at Long Key C-MAN, with seas at Satan Shoal running around 3 feet. Small Craft Advisory headlines will remain posted for all of the Keys waters this morning, and will probably be needed through the afternoon for the Straits due to lingering seas. Small Craft Exercise Caution headlines will probably be needed for parts of the area tonight. From the synopsis, strong north to northeast breezes this morning will veer toward the east and slacken somewhat this afternoon. Generally moderate easterly breezes will prevail through the weekend as high pressure settles over the Florida peninsula, becoming southeast early next week as the high moves offshore into the western Atlantic.
