Synopsis Gusty northerly winds are likely from Thursday afternoon
into Friday. Winds will decrease Friday afternoon with a warming
trend for the upcoming weekend as high pressure rebuilds over the
region.

Discussion As of 02:39 pm pdt Thursday... Noticeable change
across the bay area today as a cold front swept through the region
earlier today. As mentioned on previous discussions the front was
mostly dry, but a few automated gauges did measure some light
precip. Over the last 12 hours the highest precip totals fell
over the hills/mts with just a tad over a tenth of an inch. The
frontal passage also had some very strong gust with a few peaks
hitting 50 mph this morning, but winds subsided. The more
impactful change is developing behind the front, stronger winds
and colder temps. The 24 hour temp change indicates many locations
around the region are running about five to eight degrees colder
than yesterday as this time.

For the rest of the day and tonight, the northerly gradient will
continue to increase. The sfo-acv gradient is almost at 6 mb,
which is up 4 mb from this morning. The increasing northerly
gradient will result in very strong northerly winds. We had the
brief surge in winds this morning with the fropa, but this
afternoon and tonight will be more widespread strong winds for a
longer duration. The latest hi-res models initially develop strong
winds along the coast this afternoon and then over the hills
tonight and tomorrow. The local WRF has 925 mb (~2500 ft) winds of
45-50kt winds 03-18z Friday. All that being said, a wind advisory
remains in effect for portions of the coast through 8 pm this
evening and the hills from midnight tonight through 12 pm. It
should also be noted that the direction is northerly, which is
different than most other wind events earlier this year.

Therefore, trees that may have been sheltered could be more
exposed with the northerly winds. Winds will gradually diminish
later on Friday, but still remain breezy in the hills.

Temperatures rebound a little on Friday as h5 rise, 850mb temps
warm and the northerly gradient weakens.

Additional warming is expected this weekend with pleasant weather.

Saturday appears to be the warmest day with highs in the 70 and
80s... A few 60s along the immediate coast. To put this in context,
highs on Saturday could be 10 to 15 deg above normal for early
april. A slight cooldown on Sunday as patchy stratus returns with
the breakdown of the ridge.

Quiet continues early next week with relatively flat flow aloft
with moderating temperatures, but dry conditions. The extended
forecast is definitely low confidence as model guidance is all
over the place regarding precip next week. Some of the latest
model guidance is dry while others are wet. For now, did trend
drier and keep most rain chances over the north bay next Wed into
thur.

Aviation As of 4:40 pm pdt Thursday for 00z tafs.VFR
conditions are expected to prevail across terminals over the next
24 to 30 hours. Breezy northwest winds have been observed this
afternoon with many locations reporting sustained winds in excess
of 20 kt and gusts hovering around 30 kt. Wind speeds are expected
to decrease and gusts become less frequent after sunset and as
the night progresses. Models suggest another windy day in store
for Friday with gusts again exceeding 25 kt by the afternoon.

High confidence with cigs; moderate confidence with winds and
timing.

Vicinity of ksfo...VFR conditions expected. Gusty northwest winds
are expected to continue into the evening hours. Several
wind gust observations have exceeded 30 kt. While it is possible
gusts may exceed 35 kt, confidence remains low. Thus, will closely
monitor wind speeds and gusts through into the evening
for the potential/need for an airport weather warning. Wind
sfo bridge approach... Similar to ksfo.

Monterey bay terminals..Vfr conditions expected. Breezy and gusty
west to northwest winds at 15 to 20 kt with gusts 25 to 30 kt
will continue into the evening hours.

Marine As of 10:35 am pdt Thursday... Northwest winds will
remain strong and gusty in wake of a frontal passage earlier this
morning. Surface high pressure will build over far northern
california resulting in gale force winds over the coastal waters
through at least Friday. Northwest swell will level off while
swell periods steadily decrease today. Large and very long period
northwesterly swell will return to the coastal waters late
Saturday night that will last through the weekend.
