area forecast discussion
national weather service sacramento ca
904 pm pdt Thu jun 22 2017

Synopsis
Extended heat wave with widespread highs over 100 degrees and
warm nights through the end of the week. Isolated afternoon
thunderstorms possible over the mountains. Not as hot next week.

Discussion
All eye's on the bay area and delta this evening. There was a weak
low level circulation over the ocean that helped to bring the
stratus back to the bay area. Just waiting to see how much status
will make it's way into the bay and impacts it will have for the
interior. As of this hour the bay area is trending cooler, along
with the delta and sacramento area. While it's taking a while to
cool off due to the high heat today the flow through the delta
will make a difference by morning. Have lowered overnight forecast
lows for the delta and sacramento region cooler but potential for
a little bit more cooling is there and for slightly lower highs
for those areas on Friday. Little change in temperatures are
expected over the north end of the valley with highs around 110
once again.

Isolated thunderstorms are expected along the crest in the
afternoon once again from around alpine county southward.

Discussion
Current temperatures ranging 104 to 108 in the valley at 3 pm and
those numbers will climb higher in the next several hours. Yesterday's
peak heat occurred near 5 to 6 pm. Will have to monitor record
highs for several locations. For example, modesto is currently at
105 degrees and their record is 106 (1954). Downtown sacramento is
at 105 and the record is 107 (1981). Redding is at 106 and the
record is 107 (2006).

Northerly winds have picked up this afternoon with strongest
winds over the north and west side of the valley. The high heat,
low relative humidity and increased winds will continue high fire
danger as the red flag warning continues.

Thunderstorm chances likely to be limited to the sierra south of
lake tahoe over the next few days.

Hot weather continues across the northern half of the sacramento
valley and in the mountains late this week while cooler weather
gradually returns to the delta and southern sacramento valley as
the delta breeze returns.

.Extended discussion (Monday through Thursday)
temperatures continue to cool Monday and Tuesday as an upper
level shortwave trough pushes the ridge axis east. Upper flow
will be mostly zonal over the area, so high temperatures will
still mostly remain a few degrees above normal through midweek.

However, low temperatures will finally fall to normal by Monday
night due to southerly winds and breezy delta winds which will
finally allow overnight relief from the heat in most areas. Dry
weather expected for interior norcal beginning Monday as the
airmass stables.

I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
