Marine Weather and Tides
Mendocino, CA

Version 3.4
What's New / NOTES
5/20/2018 -- NOAA is having problems with the data feed that I use to draw the graphs. They are aware of the issue and working to resolve it. Sometimes changing the location by about a mile will give a correct graph. 3/3/2018 - There is a new GOES Satellite for the east coast that required rewriting that part of the code. Please report any issues.

Synopsis Widespread showers with embedded thunderstorms will be
possible Thursday and Friday as a low pressure system shifts east
across the region. Then building high pressure will bring warmer
and drier weather for memorial weekend.

Discussion Thunderstorms ignited across northeastern mendocino
and trinity counties this afternoon. They will continue through
the evening with lightning being the greatest impact. The upper low
pressure system will then shift over central california bringing
widespread showers with embedded thunderstorms Thursday afternoon
through Friday. Instability and CAPE parameters look most
conducive for thunderstorm development Thursday and Friday
afternoons. However, NAM and GFS model guidance also hint at the
possibility for interior thunderstorms spreading northwest across
the coast of del norte and northern humboldt counties during
Thursday evening night. Thunderstorms chances were expanded
westward in the forecast but not quite all the way to the coast
due to lower confidence at this time. Otherwise, the upper low is
forecast to pass south and exit east of the area Friday night into
Saturday. Then building high pressure will bring warmer and drier
weather to northwest california through memorial day weekend. The
hottest interior temperatures will reach the 80s on Sunday and
possibly the low 90s on Monday. Coastal areas are expected to
remain influenced by the marine stratus thus temperatures will
remain more seasonal in the upper 50s and 60s. Kml

Aviation Coastal stratus remain quite solid today along the
entire north coast reach overnight. Morning CIGS at the coast
were lifr-ifr then mostly MVFR occasionally ifr in the afternoon.

A couple of eddies, north and south of CAPE mendocino allowed for
clouds to solidify early on. However, early afternoon vis
satellite then showed cloud breaks along the entire coast within
the narrow swirls of the eddies. Eka and humboldt's bay area to
acv actually had a brief spell of sunshine and a noticeably brief
temperature spike at eka.

Interior river valleys were flooded with stratus advection once
again. Low CIGS entrenched much of the central to southern mendocino
interior until around noonday while trinity county yolla bolla
airfields were threaten with convection today.

Wednesday's afternoon 24 hr TAF period continues a strong marine
presence at the coast and coastal interior valleys into Thursday.

The significant change will be increased convection inland, and a
more easterly steering flow possibly driving convection towards the
coast... Impacting acv and cec.

Marine Light to moderate winds will persist through the work week
as a surface low located offshore maintains a generally weak
pressure gradient across the coastal waters. Periods of southerly
winds will develop across parts of the coastal waters Thursday and
Friday morning before building high pressure brings increasing
north winds on Saturday. Long range models suggests gale force
gusts will be possible on Sunday through early next week.

Meanwhile, multiple swells will dominate the sea state through the
remainder of the week including a long period south swell and a
northwesterly mid period swell. Very steep seas will build in
response to the robust winds over memorial day weekend. Kml

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
