area forecast discussion
national weather service seattle wa
900 am pdt Sun jun 16 2019

Synopsis Areas of morning clouds will give way to sunshine
again today and Monday. Tuesday will see more clouds and perhaps a
few showers or some morning drizzle. An upper trough will reach the
area after the middle of the week for a chance of showers at times.

Short term today through Tuesday Some low clouds are present
over portions of W wa this morning... Although coverage is nowhere
near what has been present the previous two days. Bulk of cloud
cover is concentrated along the coast... Over the SW interior and
along the sound. As such... Many temperature obs coming in a degree
or three warmer than this time yesterday... Which puts the area on
track with inherited forecast highs being a couple of degrees warmer
than yesterday.

Model discussion this morning will not be too different from past two
mornings given model consistency and generally boring weather
pattern. Upper level ridge will cross the area today keeping
conditions dry and warm. A very minor shortwave hot on its heels may
bring a slight chance of showers to the far northern cascades late
this afternoon into tonight but this feature moves out pretty
quickly to be of much... If any significance. Weaker ridging resumes
Monday with very little change in conditions. Tuesday sees a switch
as the area starts to feel the presence of an upper level low
approaching the area from northern bc. While conditions will remain
dry... Temperatures will fall to the lower 70s over the interior
lowlands... Lower 60s along the coast. All that said... Inherited
forecast looks good... No need for any morning updates. Smr

Long term Wednesday through Saturday From previous
discussion... The jetstream will be sagging south through the area
Tuesday night through Wednesday night. Cooler air aloft will arrive.

The ECMWF has a sharper upper trough through the area on Thursday
and might be the day with the best chance of showers.

Aviation Weak upper ridge moving east this morning with a
weak trough moving by to the north tonight. Another upper level
ridge will build offshore late tonight into Monday. Westerly flow
aloft becoming northwesterly overnight. Low level onshore
flow will continue through Monday.

Low level onshore is slightly weaker this morning and the marine
layer depth is shallower. That spells an earlier burn off for most
of the interior. Little to no clearing expected near the immediate
coast with onshore flow increasing through the day. Increasing
onshore flow will send stratus surging inland quicker tonight. That
will lead to widespread ifr or low MVFR ceilings across the area
from late tonight through at least midday Monday.

Ksea... Visible satellite imagery shows stratus has more or less
stopped its northward trek just to the north of ksea. We should see
it erode over the next couple hours with predominantlyVFR
conditions near or slightly after 17z. Stratus returns tonight
between 09z and 12z and is likely to be slightly higher and thicker.

Burnoff could take considerably longer on Monday. Surface winds
light and variable becoming w-nw 5 to 10 knots this afternoon and
evening. 27

Marine High pressure over the coastal waters with lower
pressure inland will result in varying degrees of onshore flow
through the week. Gale force westerlies are likely in the central
and eastern strait of juan de fuca in the evening through early
morning hours through Tuesday night. Small craft advisory winds in
the adjacent waters, admiralty inlet and northern inland waters
during the same time. Felton

Hydrology The daily hydrology discussion has ended until the
start of the next rainy season; it will only be updated as needed
until then.

Sew watches warnings advisories
Wa... None.

Pz... Small craft advisory until 6 pm pdt this evening for central
u.S. Waters strait of juan de fuca-east entrance u.S. Waters
strait of juan de fuca.

Gale warning from 6 pm this evening to 5 am pdt Monday for
central u.S. Waters strait of juan de fuca-east entrance u.S.

Waters strait of juan de fuca.

Small craft advisory from 6 pm this evening to 5 am pdt Monday
for admiralty inlet-northern inland waters including the san juan
islands.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
