national weather service juneau ak
411 pm akdt Tue mar 28 2017

Short term /tonight through Thursday/ Upper level flow will
remain swly and onshore through Wednesday with weak impulses
moving across the area. At the surface, a low will approach the
pws area from the south. A frontal trough assoc with this low
will increase the threat of showers through the night, especially
across the northern half of the panhandle. Some breaks over the
south could induce some patchy fog tomorrow morning. More
bands of showers continue through Wednesday. Some snow will
likely mix in during the overnight period into the early mornings,
but little to no accumulation is expected.

An upper level and surface ridge of high pressure will build over
the eastern gulf Wednesday night then shift east over the
panhandle through Thursday afternoon. Showers will diminish during
this time as a result.

On Thursday a stronger system looks to move across the gulf SW to
ne. Expect winds over the outside waters to increase to gale
force through the afternoon. As the front moves into the
panhandle in the evening expect areas along the outer coast to
have some gusty winds as well, likely up to 40mph. This looks to
be a warm system with a long fetch of moisture from the s-sw.

Expect most of the precip to fall as rain, likely heavy at times,
but again some snow could be mixed in at the start of the event
depending on when the precip moves in. This will be looked at with
greater detail over the next 2 days.

Used mainly the GFS and NAM for updates today. Overall, models
were in good agreement and forecast confidence is average to above
average.

Long term /as of 513 am Tuesday/ There is a small change in
timing on Wednesday for the front that is moving into the eastern
gulf. Model runs have increased the speed this front is moving
across the gulf and this is reflected in the current forecasts. In
addition, wind speeds will be stronger along the outer waters
with this front with a large swath of gales across most of these
waters. The upper level trough will move through southeast ak in
conjunction with the front and that will allow an upper level
ridge to briefly move across southeast on Thursday. While it
appears that there will still be a few rain/snow showers lingering
around the area Thursday, this ridge may be potent enough to
suppress most of the precipitation and might even provide a break
or two in the clouds. This possibility is being indicated on the
06z model runs on both the NAM and gfs.

Models are consistent with bringing the next system into southeast
Thursday night and precipitation persisting with this one through
most of the weekend across the region.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
