southeast alaska forecast discussion
national weather service juneau ak
607 am akdt Sat apr 21 2018

Short term Saturday to Monday surface low that moved north
through hecate strait late Friday night has moved across the
southeastern panhandle into british columbia. Rain spread north
to the east central panhandle and is now being pulled east with
the low. A weak onshore flow pattern will occur today to push
the residual shower activity from the gulf inland. A band of
showers will be moving to the coast by mid morning Saturday and
then some more wides spread showers from the east central gulf
will approach the coast. A weak trough aloft will assist a weak
surface through as it moves onshore.

A mid 980 mb low will move northeast into the gulf to be south of
kodiak island by Sunday morning. The associated frontal band will
spread gale force winds to the coastal zones on Sunday and the
rain with it will begin to impact the coastal areas by Sunday
morning. A developing wave on the frontal band south of the gulf
is slowing the eastward progression down so that front is still
trying to move through the central panhandle Monday morning. A
second wave looks like will move into the southern panhandle
around midday Monday.

Modification to the grids where needed have a stronger GFS bias
however NAM was fairly usable, and biggest impact was to the sky
and pops portion of the forecast for Saturday morning. Only minor
changes to the wind forecast, through the weekend.

Long term Monday through Saturday as of 10 pm Friday upper
trof will move NE across the area mon-tue. Another trof will
amplify over the n-central pac into the E bering sea. Ridging will
build downstream over western canada. Models have trended toward
a stronger ridge, and this will likely have an effect on a system
moving toward the area for late Tue into early thu. Still some
important model differences to work out for this system and any
following systems later in the week. Ended up basically staying
with current forecast in long range, waiting to see if we get
better agreement especially on tue-wed system.

Occluded front will be moving slowly E across the area Mon and mon
night. Looking like most precip with this front will fall over the
nw half of the area. May have some gale force winds over the ne
gulf early Mon but front will be weakening. Weak trof should move
in behind the front tue.

Following occluded front appears to be weaker and holding up
further W in latest model runs, but models have been inconsistent
with it. Big problem seems to be how strong ridging builds over
and E of the area. If the current models maintain the stronger
ridge idea, later shifts may need to keep the front further w
along with the stronger winds and precip. After Wed night,
forecast confidence drops off even more as the model differences
only increase. Overall, looking more like the southern panhandle
will not get as much rain as previously thought, which may not
alleviate the abnormally dry conditions there.

Aviation Localize dense fog this morning across chichagof
island to glacier bay is reducing visibility, and low clouds have
some ceilings under a 1000 feet from frederick sound to glacier
bay. Expect fog and ceilings to lift through midday with ceiling
expected in the 3000 to 5000 ft range across the panhandle.

Conditions will deteriorate by Sunday morning.

Ajk watches warnings advisories
Public... Dense fog advisory until 8 am akdt this morning for akz020-021.

Marine... Gale warning for pkz052.

Small craft advisory for pkz041>043-051.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
