Marine Weather and Tides
Stebbins, AK

Version 3.4
What's New / NOTES
5/20/2018 -- NOAA is having problems with the data feed that I use to draw the graphs. They are aware of the issue and working to resolve it. Sometimes changing the location by about a mile will give a correct graph. 3/3/2018 - There is a new GOES Satellite for the east coast that required rewriting that part of the code. Please report any issues.

Discussion
The 00z model suite initialized well against the 00z surface
analysis and verified well against the 06z surface analysis. Model
spread remains reasonable through Sunday but begins to show
significant spread on the strength and position of an upper level
low forecast to move into the northeast gulf of alaska Monday.

Model spread continues to increase early next week with ridging
developing over the interior and troughing developing again over
the west coast and bering sea. The ridging over central alaska
will start a warming and drying pattern over the interior next
week.

Arctic coast and brooks range... Stratus, low ceilings, fog and
flurries will continue over the the north slope today and Friday.

Current observations continue to indicate lifr ceilings with
conditions expected to continue through Friday with only brief
periods of ifr ceilings. Northeast to east winds at 15 to 30 mph
will continue through Friday. Temperatures will remain steady.

Central and eastern interior... Scattered showers this morning will
increase becoming widespread this afternoon and evening over much
of the central and eastern interior to the south of the yukon
river. Expect isolated thunderstorms to develop this afternoon
and evening evening along a line from eagle to fairbanks to tanana
and southwest to near marshall. Winds aloft remain light and will
produce slow moving showers and thunderstorms which will produce
locally heavy rainfall. The heaviest rainfall is expected to fall
to the east and south of fairbanks with an additional 0.50 to 0.75
inches expected through Friday morning, however locally heavier
rainfall totals are possible in these areas with slow moving the
showers and thunderstorms. Rivers remain high, see below for
details. Winds generally light. Temperatures slightly cooler with
cloudy conditions the next 24 hours.

West coast and western interior... Stratus continues to be spun
into kotzebue sound where a dense fog continues to move in and
out of different locations and playing havoc with aviation and
marine forecasts. Flurries or sprinkles will continue on the outer
capes. Dense fog in areas of kotzebue sound will continue through
late morning Thursday. Expect isolated to scattered showers in
the middle yukon and upper kuskokwim valleys today with isolated
thunderstorms from galena south to near marshall. Wind direction
remain quite variable at 5 to 20 mph with strongest winds along
the coast. No significant change in temperatures expected.

Coastal hazard potential days 3 and 4... None.

Fire weather
Thunderstorms remain the primary concern Thursday and Friday
however the thunderstorms will be wet, and isolated. Thunderstorm
activity will occur along a line from eagle to fairbanks to tanana
and then southwest to near marshall. Wetting rains are expected for
most areas south and east of fairbanks for both Thursday and
Friday. Minimum relative humidity values are expected to remain above
30 percent, with excellent overnight recovery in most locations.

GOES Local Image of Alaska    EDIT
NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
