northern alaska forecast discussion
national weather service fairbanks ak
443 am akst Mon jan 22 2018
Models in fair agreement through 60 hrs and beyond with slight
differences in the upper low placement after 60 hrs. A cold 506
dam upper level low center over barrow will sink down over the
center of the state and weaken slightly to 508 dam by Wednesday
morning then deepen again as it moves near kodiak island. General
model consensus keeps the longwave trough over northern alaska and
a high pressure ridge over the bering sea and west coast. Ridging
will persist over the bering and west coast through next weekend.
To the east of the upper low, cloudy conditions will continue to
help moderate temperatures, while to the west predominately clear
skies will allow for strong radiational cooling and will produce
Arctic coast and brooks range... Winds have dropped off enough
over the slope so there are no wind chill advisories this morning.
Some areas are still close to 50 below wind chills. Cold
temperatures persist where it is clear. 35 below around deadhorse
this morning. Cold temperatures and areas of stratus will persist
Eastern and central interior... Fairbanks dropped to 30 below
yesterday morning due to a few hours of clear skies. This was the
coldest temperature so far this winter in fairbanks. Temperatures|
in fairbanks area expected to remain cold through the week, with
temperatures between 15 and 30 below zero. Skies are expected to
remain mostly cloudy through the week over the interior with
flurries light snow. Light accumulations expected. The cloudy
conditions will help keep temperatures from bottoming out even
further through Wednesday. West of nenana, where skies have
cleared out, temperatures will fall into the 30s below this
morning, and then remain between 30 and 40 below through most of
this week. The gradient does tighten up over higher terrain across
much of the northern ak as the upper level low drops down near
kodiak and deepens. This will have to be watched for potential
wind chill issues.
West coast and western interior... Maximum radiational cooling
under generally clear skies will allow for temperatures to drop
into the 30s and 40s below this morning. Currently huslia and
bettles near 45 below with ice fog. Winds are light but could
still produce very low wind chills with these temperatures. Winds
are still fairly strong along the coast and there is a wind chill
advisory for zone 210 through 6 pm this evening. West winds 15 to
25 mph will persist through the day. Winds will remain below 15
mph for most areas. Below normal temperatures will persist across
the region throughout the forecast period.
Coastal hazard potential days 3 and 4... None.
Afg watches warnings advisories
Wind chill advisory for akz210.

The information on this web site has not been checked for accuracy. It is for entertainment purposes only and should be independently verified before using for any other reason. There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
