SYNOPSIS
A weather system will approach the west coast on Tuesday and will bring strong winds, snow and blowing snow to Saint Lawrence Island on Tuesday. Unsettled weather will continue into Thursday for the west coast. High pressure will continue to dominate the Interior through much of the week.
DISCUSSION
A 495 dam upper level low over the western Bering will begin to impact the west coast Tuesday into Thursday weakening to 515 dam by Thursday and dropping south across the Aleutians on Friday.
Ridging will rebuild over the Interior Tue through Thursday. Cold 850 temps will remain over the north slope through Tuesday.
West coast...Another front will approach the west coast Tuesday into Wed producing strong winds, snow and blowing snow with low visibility to Saint Lawrence Island on Tuesday. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued. Mixed precip expected across the Seward Penn and south along the Yukon Delta Coast. Rain/snow showers will likely continue over the west coast due to upper level low over the Bering.
Interior...Slightly cooler highs expected through Tuesday. Highs in the mid to upper 50s over most areas of the Interior. Warming back to 60 by Wednesday. A chance of isolated showers around the Interior Tuesday morning, then high pressure builds back over the area Tuesday afternoon into Thursday.
North slope...A weak front will bring scattered snow showers to the north slope and Brooks Range today. Light snow accumulations expected. High pressure will build back over the area Wed and Thursday. High Temps will warm back up to near 20 above Tuesday through Thursday.
Extended Forecast Days 4-7...High pressure will dominate the Interior through much of the week. West coast will remain unsettled with an upper level low remaining over the Southern Bering and spinning shortwaves across the west coast Tuesday through Thursday before moving south across the Central Aleautians on Friday. Models begin to diverge later next weekend and early next week. GFS has the upper high hanging on over the Interior while the ECMWF has an upper level low dropping out of the Arctic.
Leaning towards the GFS solution.
