1. Release the brake band by rotating the brake screw in a counter clockwise direction. Remove the Halyard wire from the winch drum using a 5/32" Allen wrench to loosen the two 5/16" dia. set screws that anchor the end of the Halyard to the winch drum. The anchoring screws can be reached thru the 7/16" dia. hole drilled thru the winch housing next to the winch handle socket. Rotate the drum slowly until each screw aligns with the 5/16" dia. hole.

2. Using a 1/2" wrench, of the box, socket or open variety, remove the four hexagon type 5/16" dia. cap screws located around the flange portion of the halyard winch housing. 3. Remove the winch housing by lifting it straight up, or pulling it out horizontally if the winch is installed on the mast. If, due to accumulated salt deposits, the housing will not lift normally off of its base, it should be gently pried or tapped off with a soft hammer. 4. Remove the center shaft by pulling it straight out of the base socket. Note carefully the relative orientation of the pawls and pawl springs as it is imperative that this relationship be maintained during reassembly to insure the correct functioning of the winch. 5. Remove the drum, brake band assembly, and the ratchet ring as an integral package. Place the drum and the associated parts on a flat surface, or on the top of a work bench, being careful to set the end of the drum with the opendages facing up. Carefully note the relative orientation of the ratchet ring's notches in relation to the two pawls, this relationship must also be observed during reassembly to insure the proper functioning of the winch. 6. Remove from the drum the brake band assembly and the ratchet ring; also the four pawls and the pawl springs. Remove the brake band screw with its attached handle from the brake band. 7. Wash all the parts using petroleum solvent. 8. Reassemble the corresponding parts in the reverse order or sequence of disassembly observing the orientation of four pawls and springs; the bent legs of the springs are to be assembled resting on the drum, the straight legs of the springs should nest into the slot of the pawls. When reassembling the ratchet ring it should allow the two corresponding pawls to nest completely into the respective ring notches with the end of the pawls facing the short wall of the notch, and the long side of the pawls parallel to the long face, or side of the notch. When reassembling the band screw into the brake band, lubricate the screw threads with medium weight machine oil. The pawl sockets too, should be lubricated with medium weight oil, the roller bearings should be covered generously with 'Barients' Barlube. The brake band may be assembled with the screw handle to either side of the winch, to obtain a right or left handed winch as desired, the operation of the winch will not be impaired by the choice of the handle position.
