Winch Service Manual for Barient No. 1 - Halyard-1968



Release the brake band by rotating the brake screw in a counter clockwise direction. Remove the Halyard wire from the winch drum using a 5/32" Allen wrench to loosen the two 5/16" dia. set screws that anchor the end of the Halyard to the winch drum. The anchoring screws can be reached thru the slot on top of the housing next to the winch handle socket. Rotate the drum slowly until each screw aligns with the slot.

Using an Allen wrench, loosen and remove the (4) dia. socket cap screws located around the flange portion of the halyard winch housing. Remove the winch housing by lifting it straight up, or pulling it out horizontally if the winch is installed on the mast. If, due to accumulated salt deposits, the housing will not lift normally off of its base, it should be gently pried, or tapped off with a soft hammer. Care must be exercised, while removing the housing, to avoid dropping one of the roller bearings. The bearings could be damaged if allowed to hit a hard deck or floor. Remove the winch drum and the main shaft simultaneously, by grasping the drum with one hand, while supporting the projecting end of the main shaft with the other hand, being careful not to drop one or both roller bearings within the drum. The #1 and #2A Halyard winches are provided with a spacer located between the drum bearings. All three winches #1, #2, and #2A, have a thick bronze washer, or spacer, between the main shaft gear and the inner face of the winch drum. Remove the brake band assembly, the ratchet ring and the anchor pin. Remove the brake band screw group from the brake band. Remove the gear carrier assembly. Remove the following parts from the gear carrier: The two pawls, plungers and springs located near the edge of the carrier. Remove the two cotter keys holding captive the two other pawls, plungers and springs. Remove these two pawls, plungers and springs: (note that these pawls are shaped so as to allow a better contact with the gears). When reassembling the gear carrier these two pawls must be placed in their original sockets. The two gears and the washer type bronze spacer are not removed while servicing the winch unless they are damaged and they require replacing. Remove the roller bearing located inside of the winch base's center bore. Wash all the parts using petroleum solvent. Wire brush off all the accumulation of foreign matter found on the exposed parts. The use of a stainless steel or bronze brush is recommended. Lubricate the gear pivots with light machine oil, using a squirt type of oil can to facilitate the injection of the oil through the holes on the gear hubs. Lubricate generously with light machine oil all the following parts:
pawls, plungers, springs, brake band screw and the raised portion of the winch base that mates with the gear carrier. Lubricate the gear teeth of all the gears and the roller bearings using "Barient Barlube " or its equivalent DO NOT lubricate the brake band, nor its mating ratchet ring. Reassemble all the parts in the reverse order of take-down, If all the parts have been properly reassembled, the winch is now ready for operation.
