Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1012 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

DISCUSSION. Mean-layer ridging centered over the western Gulf of Mexico maintains support for a low level anticyclone parked over the southeastern United States. A long wave trough stalled over the Bahamas continues to drive stable mid-level air to the southeast through the Keys and Florida. Moderate to nearly fresh northeast breezes prevail along the island chain and at the marine observation platforms. Temperatures are in the lower to mid 80s with dewpoints near 70. Skies are sunny and the KBYX radar detects isolated showers across the Straits of Florida. These showers are associated with a previously analyzed inverted SFC trough which was over the Bahamas yesterday. The amplitude of this trough has flattened and we do not expect these showers to increase in coverage. For the island chain, nearly nil rain chances are expected through the afternoon. No changes needed or planned.

MARINE. There are no watches, warnings, or advisories currently in effect for the coastal waters of the Florida Keys. High pressure anchored over the southeastern United States will result in an extended period of moderate northeast to east breezes. Breezes will freshen further Thursday night into Friday. A Small Craft Advisory may be required for portions of the coastal waters of the Florida Keys Friday night through Saturday night.

AVIATION. VFR conditions will prevail at EYW and MTH through tonight. A few isolated showers nearby the island chain are expected to be out of the vicinity of both island terminals late this morning. Near- surface winds will be out of the northeast to east at near 10 knots with occasional gusts to 15 to 20 knots. Winds will lighten a little this afternoon before peaking again tonight.

CLIMATE. In 1929, a Category 2 Hurricane moved northwest across Key Largo where wind gusts were estimated at 150 mph and there was a ten- minute eye lull. At Long Key, the minimum pressure was 28.18" (954 mb), and at Key West the minimum pressure was 29.21" (989 mb) and the maximum sustained winds were 66 mph.
