Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Melbourne FL 1100 AM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

UPDATE. Weak cold front has pushed into the central FL this morning, and will stall across the area through this afternoon. Drier air north of this boundary have already allowed dewpoints to fall into the mid to upper 60s this morning, near to north of Orlando, which is certainly a nice change from the very humid conditions of late. Showers and storms will therefore remain rather limited north of the front due to this drier air, with rain chances remaining 20 percent or less north of Orlando this afternoon. While south of a line from Orlando to the Cape, more moist and humid conditions will remain, leading to scattered to numerous showers and storms developing into the afternoon. Rain chances increase to around 50 percent across Osceola and southern Brevard counties up to 60-70 percent across Okeechobee County and the Treasure Coast.

Lower clouds near and south of the front are breaking up into this morning, and there should be enough daytime heating for highs to reach the mid to upper 80s across the region. Sufficient instability and boundary interactions between sea/lake breeze boundaries could lead to few strong storms across central and southern portions of east central Florida, producing frequent lightning strikes and gusty winds. Numerous boundary collisions may be able to locally maximize low level shear and produce storm rotation. Locally heavy rainfall will also continue to be a potential storm hazard, with quick accumulations of 1-3 inches leading to standing water on roadways and poor drainage areas.

AVIATION. Lingering MVFR/localized IFR cigs continue in some spots along and south of a weak cold front that will stall out from near to south of Orlando today. Low clouds will continue to lift and break up some into the early afternoon, with VFR conditions generally expected. However, increasing coverage of showers and storms, especially south of a line from KMCO-KTIX will lead to tempo IFR/MVFR conditions into the afternoon/early evening. North of KMCO, rain chances are quite low due to drier air that has worked in north of the front.

MARINE. Northerly winds will increase up to around 15 knots north of a weak cold front that will stall and linger south of the Cape. This will lead to deteriorating boating conditions as seas build up to 6 feet well offshore of Volusia and eventually Brevard County later this afternoon into tonight. Have scaled back the exercise caution headlines to just offshore Volusia County where these seas are expected to be highest for this afternoon.
