Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Peachtree City GA 527 AM EST Sun Jan 16 2022

SHORT TERM /Today through Monday/.

Main forecast concerns are very strong wind this morning and timing, distribution and intensity of winter precipitation today and early this evening.

Watching reports closely to tweak forecast at this point. Recent HRRR runs seem to be handling temperatures and p-types well. Most immediate concern is very strong winds over north GA as strong sfc low plows into wedge. Can't remember a time when closed surface low makes it this far into north GA while a wedge is in place. Some hires guidance really hitting wind gusts over north GA between 6 and 10 AM this morning before subsiding as sfc low moves ENE. Already seeing numerous reports of 35 mph gusts including airport ASOS/AWOS and mountain RAWS stations. Peak gust at ATL 37 mph so far. Already expanded wind advisory to include all of central GA and extended expiration of advisory and high wind warning to 2 PM.

These strong winds also expected to enhance ice accumulations and increase threat of trees/limbs and power lines down. 09Z sounding shows warm layer at 6-10kft that was forecast moving in. Have also received reports that snow is transitioning to -FZRA in NW Dawson County. Precip becoming more scattered as dry slot begins to work into the area. Going PoPs and p-types still appear on track. - FZRA/IP will switch back to -SN after 17Z. Snow will taper off as upper low lifts out after 00Z, not much accumulation expected after that point. Have not adjusted final amounts too much at this point but may make a final adjustment before 7 AM.

Will be holding off on any special weather statement for low wind chills and black ice until messaging for ongoing winter event wraps up, but does appear we received sufficient liquid precip amounts (already over an inch in parts of ATL metro) for refreezing threat. Lowest wind chills (15-25 most of CWA and 5-15 in the mountains) should occur around sunrise Mon but will be very low all night and much of Monday.

SNELSON

LONG TERM /Monday Night through Saturday/.

A dry ridge dominated Tuesday offers only a brief reprieve in the active pattern as the next upper wave and translated sfc cold front pushes into the area for Wednesday afternoon into Thursday looking to initially generate mainly rain showers. Where it gets interesting is how the models evolve with a secondary piece of upper wave energy and potential coastal cyclogenesis along a lingering enhanced moisture axis near the possibly more stalled front for late Thursday and Friday. Both the GFS and Euro indicate potential for this as the next round of wintry precip, though there is lack of consensus and run-to-run consistency. The latest GFS indicates more of a clipper type system and progged thermal profile suggest primarily all snow p-type, while the Euro has more of the coastal low influence and more lingering moisture with the upper trough amplification digging farther south supporting various p-types and what could be snow in parts of the north and west and freezing rain in the south and east. Given the uncertainty with this far out and lack of agreement, have not included freezing rain in the grids but have advertised some snow potential.

AVIATION. 06Z Update .

IFR conditions and very strong winds expected through much of the forecast. Cigs will remain 300-600ft with vsbys dropping to 1-3SM by 15Z and remaining low most of the forecast. Precip should stay mostly -RA with some -PL possibly mixed in at all but KAHN where more -FZRA and -SN expected. Sfc winds 15-25kts with G30-38kts this morning then becoming SW then W 10-15kts as low pressure moves through this afternoon. Could see a few light snow showers but mostly dry after 00Z Mon.

//ATL Confidence . 06Z Update . Low-Medium confidence on precip type timing. Medium-High on wind direction and cig/vsby timing.
