Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 638 PM EDT Fri Sep 24 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will bring cool, dry weather to the Carolinas this weekend. Temperatures and humidity will return toward normal next week as the high moves offshore and southerly winds develop. A cold front will arrive from the north next Wednesday or Thursday, but with only low rain chances.

UPDATE. Scattered clouds moving southward across the Cape Fear area should continue through late evening before dissipating overnight. This moisture originates from a long north- northeasterly flow across the New Jersey coastal waters southward to the Pamlico Sound. Aside from minor tweaks to temps, dewpoints, and sky cover, no changes were needed to the forecast.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/. Conditions couldn't get much quieter or nicer as surface high pressure will be the main if not essentially the only player for the near term forecast. This is courtesy of modest mid level troughing that will get reinforced a bit overnight Saturday into early Sunday. Applying good radiational cooling conditions lows Saturday morning should bottom out in the lower 50s across the board and perhaps just a shade warmer Sunday morning. Highs Saturday will be a degree or two either side of 80 with if anything slightly cooler inland.

SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/. Very quiet weather continues into the second half of the weekend as 1018 mb high pressure centers directly over the local area, leading to continued sunny/clear skies and light winds. High temps in the low 80s Sun, followed by another night of good radiational cooling Sun night allowing temps to fall into the 50s inland and 60 at the coast.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. Fairly uneventful weather conditions next week as the local area will remain under the influence of high pressure, aside from a backdoor cold fropa mid week. High temps in the 80s Mon through Wed before the fropa, falling to the upr 70s/lwr 80s Thu/Fri. Only (low) chance of rain in the Long Term is late in the period and near the coast away from the drier inland air.

AVIATION /23Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. Aside from scattered stratocumulus clouds moving across ILM and maybe CRE this evening, SKC & VFR will continue over the next 24 hours. Light northerly winds tonight will turn westerly Saturday.

Extended Outlook . VFR.

MARINE. Through Saturday Night: A mostly north to northeast flow will be in place across the waters this evening into Saturday morning. The winds will turn to more of a westerly direction later Saturday into Sunday morning as a weak surface through moves across. Wind speeds will be in a 10-15 knot range. Overall significant seas will be 2-4 feet early dropping to center more around two feet early Sunday.

Sunday Through Tuesday: Sub-SCA conditions continue Sun through Tue as the area remains under the influence of sfc high pressure. NW flow Sun shifts to the S/SW by Mon aftn and Tue as the center of the high shifts offshore, while 2-3 ft seas Sun become 1-2 ft Mon and Tue. This coincides with a slight weakening over time in the easterly 8-10 sec swell.
