Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 347 AM PDT Thu Oct 21 2021

SYNOPSIS. Northern California will be in a wet pattern through at least Tuesday. Moderate to locally heavy rain, Gusty winds, and mountain snow will be possible at times. High temperatures across Northern California are forecast to be 10 to 20 degrees below average.

DISCUSSION. Moisture flow continues into NorCal with radar showing scattered light precipitation across most of the area early this morning. Current temperatures are very mild with mainly 40s in the mountains and 50s across the lower elevations.

Next stronger system moves in late this afternoon and overnight tonight. HREF continues to indicate a high potential for hourly rainfall rates exceed 1/2 inch/hour over Shasta County and the foothills and southern Cascade Range tonight into early Friday. Will extend the Flash Flood Watch to include the recent burn scars in Shasta County as well continuing the watch over eastern Tehama, eastern Butte and western Plumas counties. Greatest potential impacts will be ash and debris flows over the burn scars.

Some convective potential will continue across the northern portion of the forecast area Friday afternoon, but any thunderstorms that develop will likely be pretty isolated. Otherwise a relative break is expected late Friday through much of Saturday.

The strongest system is expected to move through Sunday and Sunday night with heavy rain and high snow levels. Strong southerly winds will also be possible over the mountains, and mainly from Sacramento southward in the Central Valley. Heavy snow will develop in the northern Sierra late Sunday night and continue Monday with significant travel impacts likely across the passes.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday). Heavy snow likely in the northern Sierra Monday as snow levels lower below pass level. Precipitation is expected to taper and retreat northward beginning Tuesday as ridging from the eastern Pacific moves into NorCal. Milder temperatures return by the middle of next week.

AVIATION. Widespread MVFR conditions in precipitation with local IFR next 24 hours, mainly from the Sacramento area northward. Surface wind gusts increasing to 15-30 kts north of KMYV after 20Z with higher gusts possible in the mountains.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Flash Flood Watch from this evening through Friday morning for Burney Basin / Eastern Shasta County-Mountains Southwestern Shasta County to Western Colusa County-Northeast Foothills/Sacramento Valley-Northern Sacramento Valley-Shasta Lake Area / Northern Shasta County-Western Plumas County/Lassen Park.
