SYNOPSIS. A cold front stretched from north of Findlay to the south shore of Lake Erie near Lorain then northeast to Near Buffalo early this morning. This boundary will continue south through the morning reaching central Ohio eastward into central Pennsylvania by early afternoon. Ridge of high pressure then extends southward from Canada by Tuesday evening, then lingers at varying strengths into the weekend.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. A cold front stretched from north of Findlay to the south shore of Lake Erie near Lorain then northeast to Near Buffalo early this morning. Best forcing for showers and thunderstorms has been a bit further south across central/southern OH into PA. These seem to be near the better jet energy that is moving through the flow with an upper level trough. We will still need to monitor the movement of an 850 mb boundary that should sag southward across the lake through sunrise. A few isolated showers could occur just about anywhere along this 850 mb boundary but think the greatest chances will be across extreme NE OH into NW PA. This is where scatttered showers, maybe a rumble of thunder, could exist through mid morning.

The cold front should reach central OH into central PA by evening with high pressure ridging southward in its wake. The high pressure ridge from Canada will increase in strength through tonight with dry conditions expected tonight. Cloud cover should slowly decrease from north to south through the day with clear to mostly clears skies arriving overnight. Highs today are expected to be cooler with them ranging from the mid 60's north to the mid 70's south. Drier air and light winds tonight will allow temperatures to fall into the 40's inland. lakeshore areas should remain in the lower to mid 50's.

SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/. The upper level flow will become nearly stationary as a blocking pattern develops during the short term period. An amplified trough over the east and west will leave an amplified ridge, and associated high pressure, over the area. Winds through the period will generally be light and with a northerly component. By Thursday morning, models suggest winds shifting to northeasterly as a backdoor cold front moves through the area. The overall airmass remains dry however, so the weak boundary may only bring slightly cooler temperatures. High temperatures will be near normal in the 60s to low 70s, with overnight lows dropping into the 40s to low 50s.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. The long term period begins in a similar pattern to the short term as the upper level ridge remains strong through Friday. The biggest uncertainty is when the amplified, blocking pattern aloft will finally break down and the flow again become progressive. There is very little model agreement in exact timing, with the general idea of it happening sometime over the weekend. As the system becomes more progressive, the chance of showers increases with the southwesterly flow on the leading edge of the trough. Have opted for isolated showers beginning Saturday evening through much of the long term, however this will need to continue to be monitored and refined. Temperatures will remain near normal through the period.

AVIATION /06Z Tuesday THROUGH Saturday/. A cold front stretched from north of Findlay to the south shore of Lake Erie near Lorain then northeast to Near Buffalo early this morning. This boundary will continue to move southward through the morning and should move into central OH by mid afternoon. MVFR, maybe brief IFR, conditions will be delayed by a couple hours after a wind shift to the north as the lake provides the low level moisture for their development. Cant rule out a passing showers across extreme NE OH into NW PA through mid morning. MVFR ceilings gradually lift through the afternoon with a return of VFR conditions at all locations by 03Z.

Light winds ahead of the front become northerly in its wake. Speeds generally under 10 knots but could be slightly higher near the south shore of the lake.

Outlook . Non-VFR with patchy fog may be possible Tuesday night and Wednesday night.

MARINE. Southwest winds across Lake Erie continue to weaken as a cold front approaches from the north. Currently, a Small Craft Advisory remain in effect for the near shore zone off of Erie, PA where waves 3-5 feet are expected to persist into the evening. As a result, there is also a high risk of rip currents possible. Near sunset, winds across the lake will weaken to 5-10 knots and waves will diminish to 1-3 feet. The aforementioned cold front is expected to move south across the lake tonight, allow for a shift of winds to become north then northeasterly. Winds will be 10-15 knots, building waves to near 3 feet. High pressure builds over the lake and will remain through at least Thursday as an upper level blocking pattern occurs. Wednesday into Thursday there is a chance for a backdoor cold front to move across the lake.
