AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION . UPDATED National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 633 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SHORT TERM. (This Evening through Friday) Issued at 314 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Gusty winds across the area this afternoon will diminish by evening as the atmosphere decouples, becoming light overnight as a surface trough begins to drift into the region and the surface gradient relaxes. It will be a little milder tonight out ahead of the surface trough, with lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Models are in decent agreement on bringing a cold front to the western edge of our CWA between 03Z-06Z. The front then slides eastward, exiting our CWA around 18Z on Friday. The strongest cold air advection will begin to sweep into the area by mid morning, and with rising surface pressure and steepening low level lapse rates, winds will become gusty for a few hours just behind the front. It will not become overly windy with winds of 25 to 35 kts at the top of the mixed layer, but still could have gusts of around 35 mph. As far as rain chances - measurable rain will be hard to come by with dry low levels, but could see very light rain or sprinkles with the front, with slight chances lingering into the afternoon as a weak shortwave drifts in behind the front. With the cold air advection it will be a cooler day, but with enhanced mixing and some sunshine by the afternoon, 60s to near 70 will be reached.

LONG TERM. (Friday Night through Thursday) Issued at 314 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

On Friday night surface ridging builds into the region. With this will come light winds and clear skies, and with maximal radiational cooling lows will drop into the upper 30s to lower 40s.

High pressure moves off to the southeast on Saturday, and in a returning southerly flow temperatures will begin to warm back into the upper 60s to upper 70s. The real warming will take place for the beginning of next week as upper level ridging builds eastward across the region, with deterministic models and ensembles supporting well above normal temperatures for at least Sunday through Tuesday as readings rise into the mid and upper 80s over portions of the CWA. Dry conditions look to prevail through the period. By the middle to the end of next week, models begin to diverge a bit on the handling of upper level energy over the western CONUS. Dependent on how quickly this moves eastward will determine when precipitation chances will return to our area, though it does look like there will be a possibility toward next Thursday.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Friday evening) Issued at 629 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

VFR conditions will prevail through the period. Light southeast winds tonight will turn north behind a passing cold front late tonight, starting at HON after midnight and at FSD/SUX around or shortly after sunrise. A few hours after the frontal passage, northwest winds will ramp up with gusts up to 35 kts. Winds should decrease through the afternoon. May see light showers or sprinkles with and/or behind the front Friday morning as well, mainly along and northeast of a Huron SD to Pipestone MN to Spencer IA line.
