AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 1026 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

SHORT TERM. (This Evening through Monday) Issued at 236 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

A weak wave with no moisture will move through this evening which will turn surface winds around to a more northerly and easterly direction. Winds will also be on the lighter side with no cloud cover, so leaned towards the 25th percentile for lows for Monday morning.

Even with this weak front that slid through during the night, temperatures will remain fairly unchanged. Once again, very little if any cloud cover expected, but winds should be pretty light so a very nice day. Highs mostly in the 80s but maybe a few upper 70s in southwest MN where a touch of cooler air sneaks in.

LONG TERM. (Monday Night through Sunday) Issued at 236 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

The cooler high pressure to the northeast will move out of the area and southerly flow will increase Monday night into Tuesday. Should see lows the warmest across central SD where southerly flow will develop in the evening. Lows closer to 60 in central SD and 50 to 55 in northwest IA.

Tuesday will be warm and breezy as low pressure develops across northern parts of the Western High Plains. Expect gusts around 25 mph as highs climb into the mid 80s to lower 90s. Moisture is again sparse so not anticipating much in the way of cloud cover. Did raise lows a bit Tuesday night with strong southerly flow through the entire night, so mostly lows in the lower to mid 60s.

As upper level low pressure wraps up and moves to the northwest of the area, moisture will deepen on Wednesday and rain chances will increase. For now not much of a chance for severe weather with deep southerly flow through the atmosphere and only marginal instability with a fairly skinny CAPE profile. Does look like a good chance for most locations to get a decent rain.

Rain chances will continue into Thursday as the trough of low pressure is slow to shift east and some southern stream energy wraps northward. The models are hinting that the southern part of this trough to the west will cut off to some extent, then drift north Friday into Saturday. Low confidence on this outcome, but will need low chances for rainfall during this time. Temperatures much cooler Thursday into Friday with highs mostly upper 60s to mid 70s, with this dependent upon coverage of rainfall.

Saturday into Sunday should see decreased chances for rainfall but model agreement not really there, so this is a pretty low confidence time frame. Temperatures will remain on the cooler aide, with highs similar to Thursday and Friday.

AVIATION. (For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night) Issued at 1025 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021
