Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 109 AM EST Wed Jan 19 2022

SYNOPSIS. Arctic high pressure will build across the region from the west tonight. Weak low pressure from Ontario will approach today then cross the region tonight with a cold front. Another cold front crosses the region Thursday. High pressure crosses the region Friday. Low pressure should track southeast of the region Saturday into Sunday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/. 1 AM Update . Winds are beginning to diminish, but wind chill readings across the north remain between -20 and -30 given current temperatures in the single digits to lower teens below zero. Clear skies will continue tonight. Made adjustments to PoPs and snow to hold off on accumulating snow across the west prior to 12z. Also adjusted sky slightly to delay cloud cover until after 9z given the current satellite imagery. No other significant changes were needed at this time.

Previous discussion: This morning the clouds rapidly increase as moisture is advected northward with a warm front lifting north. Light snow will develop along and ahead of the warm front. Modeled guidance is showing around 0.10 inches of liquid tomorrow combined with decent lift along the warm front. Given this and intially cold temperatures with higher ratios opted to bump up snowfall totals. The highest amounts look to be across the Central Highlands where 1-2 inches is expected with perhaps a couple 2-3 inch reports possible. Elsewhere, generally 1-1.5 inches is expected and less than that along the coast where warm air will change ptype to rain. The cold front will approach from the NW late afternoon into the evening so expected the light snow to taper to snow showers but until the front passes in the short term expect higher POPs. Temperatures will be warming much of the day with highs in the low to mid 30s across the coast, upper 20s to near 30F in Bangor area and upper teens to low 20s across the north.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/. A clipper system will cross the region Wednesday night, drawing a cold front across the forecast area. Expect numerous/scattered snow showers, possibly mixed with rain showers along the Downeast coast, early Wednesday night then decreasing overnight. However, a weak ocean low moving along the exiting cold front could keep a chance of snow showers along the Downeast coast later Wednesday night through early Thursday. A secondary cold front will cross the region Thursday with a slight chance of snow showers along the front. Otherwise, expect mostly cloudy/partly sunny skies Thursday. High pressure builds east toward the region Thursday night, then crosses the region Friday. Expect mostly clear skies Thursday night/Friday. High temperatures will be at near normal levels in advance of the cold front Thursday, then begin to fall in the wake of the cold front Thursday afternoon. Temperatures will be at much below normal levels Friday, ranging from around zero north to around 10 Downeast.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/. High pressure will cross the region Friday night with mostly clear skies and very cold temperatures. Expect high pressure early Saturday. Uncertainty then exists regarding the timing and track of a possible ocean low later Saturday into early Sunday which could impact mostly Downeast areas. High pressure is expected Monday, with another possible low Tuesday. Expect much below normal level temperatures Saturday. Expect near normal level temperatures Sunday/Monday, with below normal level temperatures Tuesday.

AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. NEAR TERM: VFR through late this morning. MVFR cigs develop by midday as an area of light snow tracks through the state. A period of IFR visibility is possible, mainly from KBGR north. MVFR w/ brief IFR cigs possible late afternoon into early evening. NW winds tonight 10-20kts w/ occasional gusts to 30kts early. Winds become light and variable around 12z before shifting S-SE late morning and increasing 5-15kts w/ higher gusts to 25kts possible at BHB. LLWS likely at most sites tonight and once again late tomorrow afternoon.

SHORT TERM: Wednesday night . MVFR/IFR early, VFR/MVFR late. Scattered/numerous snow showers, possibly mixed with rain showers along the Downeast coast, early then decreasing. South/southwest winds 5 to 10 knots, becoming west/northwest 10 to 15 knots.

Thursday . VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow showers early, then VFR. West/northwest winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots.

Thursday night through Friday night . VFR. West/northwest winds 5 to 10 knots Thursday night/Friday. Light winds Friday night.

Saturday . VFR north. VFR early, then VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow late Downeast. Variable winds 5 to 10 knots.

Saturday night through Sunday . Uncertainty dependent on possible low pressure.

MARINE. NEAR TERM: Update . Winds are decreasing as high pressure continues to build east toward the water. West to Southwest wind will increase today and into tonight in advance of an approaching cold front. Given the briefness of the break in winds early this morning, the gale warning was extended right into Wednesday night. A Freezing Spray Advisory remains in effect until 6 AM EST Wednesday.

SHORT TERM: Could have a few gusts approach gale levels early Wednesday night. Otherwise, expect small craft advisory conditions Wednesday night into Friday. Snow showers Wednesday night/Thursday. Light to moderate freezing spray Thursday night, then moderate freezing spray Friday.

CAR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. ME . Wind Chill Advisory until 4 AM EST early this morning for MEZ001>006-010. MARINE . Freezing Spray Advisory until 6 AM EST early this morning for ANZ050>052. Gale Warning until midnight EST tonight for ANZ050>052.
