Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 1244 PM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021

UPDATE. Issued at 1245 PM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021

Updated for 18Z aviation discussion

SHORT TERM. (Today through Friday) Issued at 327 AM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021

The rain continues across most of the forecast area early this morning, except in our far eastern Wisconsin counties which have mostly missed on the rain so far. Some patchy fog is possible this morning on the backside of the departing precipitation. The rain will slowly come to and end from west to east today as the upper trough moves off to the east and light southeasterly winds will go around to the north and become a bit breezy. The precipitation should be well east of the forecast area by Friday morning as ridging aloft builds in. Temperatures tonight will fall into the mid 30s in western Minnesota, but remain in the 40s from near the Twin Cities and to the east.

LONG TERM. (Friday night through Wednesday) Issued at 327 AM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021

The long term will be mainly dry, with a cooler temperatures arriving Sunday and continuing into next week.

Ridging aloft and high pressure at the surface will give us a clear calm night Friday which looks like it will lead to some areas of fog, but it should be mostly patchy and it should dissipate by around 10. Saturday looks to be the warmest day of the next 7, unless the fog is able to hold on longer which could knock the temperature back a little bit. Saturday afternoon looks lovely with light winds and plenty of sun and highs well into the 50s. A system moving north of the international border will drag a cold front across the area Saturday night and temperatures will drop back into the 40s for highs on Sunday. There is little moisture available for this front so it will come through dry. With mainly northwest flow aloft and at the surface CAA will continue to drop high temperatures into the 30s as the week progresses. Low temperatures will fall into the 20s for all next week with low to mid 20s area wide by Wednesday. Dry weather should last though the period, although there are signals that a short wave could bring some snow showers around the end of the period, but the NBM is dry for now.

AVIATION. (For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon) Issued at 1245 PM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021

Light rain will continue to diminish in intensity this afternoon, and spread farther east into west-central Wisconsin while ending across western Minnesota. Visibility could drop to MVFR during the rain this afternoon, but should then improve to VFR as the light rain transitions to drizzle & lingers into the evening. More complicated is the ceilings this afternoon through evening, as they will likely bounce between IFR & MVFR during the rain before becoming more stable tonight through tomorrow morning. Cloud cover will likely be slow to clear out tomorrow morning outside of AXN & RWF, so continued MVFR ceilings through the end of the period at eastern MN & western WI terminals. Winds will become more northwesterly this afternoon and increase in speed, with sustained winds at or above 10 kts by this evening and remaining there into tomorrow morning. Gusts around 20 kts are also possible.

KMSP . A brief lull in the precip is expected for the next few hours, which should keep ceilings above the 017 threshold. A few hours of MVFR visibility are possible late this afternoon and early this evening as another round of rain moves through, with light drizzle then likely to linger until late tonight. Ceilings are expected to drop below the 017 threshold as the rain begins late this afternoon, and likely remain at or below that level into early tomorrow afternoon.

/OUTLOOK FOR KMSP/ Sat . Chance MVFR ceilings. Wind S 5 kts becoming W. Sun . VFR. Wind NW 15G25 kts. Mon . VFR. Wind W 5-10 kts
