Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Duluth MN 1240 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021

DISCUSSION. (This evening through Thursday) Issued at 509 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021

Summary: Light showers are expected to continue tonight before clearing out Saturday morning. After the showers clear, windy, sunny, and warmer conditions will dominate for the rest of the weekend into early next week. Frost is possible for the next few mornings. The next system to move through in the middle of next week will bring more rain showers with cooler temperatures behind it.

Scattered showers ahead of an upper level trough are moving east across the CWA this evening, and should continue into tonight as the trough moves out of the area. Winds behind the precipitation is expected to be out of the northwest and gusty as the pressure gradient remains tight behind the trough. Saturday, a ridge will move in, bringing clear skies and warming maximum temperatures for the remainder of the weekend and into next week. Monday and Tuesday will be the warmest days as the back end of the ridge moves over the Northland. Temperatures at the 850 mb level will be in the 90th climatological percentile and surface highs will be in the upper 60s. Clear skies under at high pressure at night will allow for significant radiational cooling with temperatures in the low 30s each night for the next few nights. This could cause either fog or frost to form by early morning for the weekend.

The next system will be similar to a Colorado Low, as a closed, vertically stacked low moves over the Rockies and moves east across the Northern Plains. The global models are in fair agreement that the northeastern quadrant of the low will mainly affect our area, bringing more stratiform precipitation, and has higher QPF than the system we've seen this week. Northwesterly flow behind the low will advect cooler temperatures into the Northland for next weekend, though uncertainty remains high as models disagree on the magnitude.

AVIATION. (For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night) Issued at 1240 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021

MVFR cigs in HYR will improve to VFR within the next couple hours as higher cigs advect eastward. VFR conditions are expected throughout the period as a ridge begins to build. There is a small potential for some afternoon VFR cumulus in INL due to northwest flow and cold air advection aloft. However, a lack of moisture in model soundings increased confidence to keep skies clear.

MARINE. Issued at 509 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021

Scattered showers tonight will continue tonight before dissipating Saturday morning. Westerly to northwesterly winds as the low pressure moves through will be strong across western Lake Superior. These winds and waves up the 4 ft will be hazardous to small craft through tomorrow night around the Apostle Islands and Bayfield Peninsula region. Oak Point through Saxon Harbor will also see some wind gusts above 22 kts tomorrow during the day. Small Craft Advisories have been issued due to these conditions. Sunday, winds and waves will decrease to a maximum of 20 kts and 2 ft over the lake.
