Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pendleton OR 142 PM PDT Thu Oct 21 2021

SHORT TERM. Tonight through Saturday . The transition to a wet pattern continues as an upper level trough takes up position off the coast. Currently, a slow moving cold front is moving onto the Pacific Northwest coast this afternoon which is associated with a deep low pressure system off the coast of Canada. This low will continue moving to the north and leave the frontal boundary to slowly propagate eastward over the next 24 hours or so as the trough advances inland. Expect the front to pass over the Cascades this evening and then reach far eastern Oregon by Friday afternoon and evening. The slow moving nature of the front will lead to some prolonged rainfall resulting in some good wetting rain before the front finally moves into Idaho Friday night. Precipitation amounts will range from .25-.5 inches around the Columbia Basin to up to an inch in the mountains. Snow levels will begin around 9000 feet overnight then lower during Friday reaching around 6000 feet Friday night. This will place some snow in the higher elevations but not have any impact on transportation routes. A second weaker system will arrive on Saturday as the upper level trough moves across the forecast area. This system will weaken as a stronger system in the Gulf of Alaska begins to deepen the trough off the coast again. The result will be much lighter precipitation amounts Saturday.

LONG TERM. Sunday through Thursday . A very progressive and active weather pattern will continue through the extended period. As mentioned, another deep upper level low pressure system will approach the Pacific Northwest coast Saturday night. This will lift a warm front across the forecast area on Sunday followed by a cold frontal passage Sunday night. This will be another good precipitation event of mainly rain Sunday then lowering snow levels Sunday night into Monday to 5000 to 6000 feet. Ensemble models agree that the upper trough moves inland Monday followed by a moist westerly flow through midweek. Deterministic models very somewhat on the timing and amplitude of the finer details but the bottom line is that the wet pattern will continue into midweek before a bit of a ridge begins building up out of California. This will begin to lift the jet stream northward and direct the moist flow into Washington and Canada by late Wednesday and Thursday.

AVIATION. 18Z TAFs . An approaching weather system is spreading high clouds over the region in advance of an approaching cold front. Clouds will lower this evening and overnight as the cold front arrives and brings with it lowering ceilings and rain. Expect mainly VFR conditions into this evening but then some possible MVFR overnight through early Wednesday due to low ceilings and mist.
