DISCUSSION. Even though it’s officially fall, it’s going to feel more like summer through this weekend as high temperatures warm into the 70s and 80s, which equates to up to 15 degrees above normal for late September! There will be a few periods with occasional high clouds, but for the most part it will be dry with breezy afternoons.

On Monday, besides breezy south winds over Flathead Lake, increasing high clouds and even a chance for a few showers across northwest Montana later in the day will be a sign of another incoming trough of low pressure.

Our best confidence right now is for the cold front passage to be sometime early Tuesday with rain showers and snow levels falling down to around 6,000 feet later in the day. We’re not expecting much in the way of snow accumulation, but don’t be surprised to see a few mountain peaks with fresh snow after the clouds clear. There is a low probability that the trough could dig a little bit more as it moves onshore Tuesday and if this were to occur, then the system would slow down and potentially bring more precipitation to the region. Also high temperatures on Tuesday will be very tricky to nail down this far in advance due to the timing of the front. If it slows down, it could be much warmer, but if it speeds up, it could be much colder with highs in the 50s and 60s! Gusty winds will be another impact with the front and looks like the better chance for gusty winds over 20 mph will be over southwest Montana, Lemhi County and along the Continental Divide.

Near to below normal temperatures are expected by next Wednesday. Night-time temperatures will probably tumble towards the freezing mark or below for many valley locations. So if you’ve been keeping your garden alive this long, you may want to plan on covering again.

Beyond Wednesday, the deep upper level trough over the northeastern Pacific will be entrenched leaving us in southwest flow aloft. This would mean the potential for moderating temperatures to above normal readings but unsettled with possible disturbances and showery weather.

AVIATION. Pleasant flying conditions are expected across the region through the weekend. There could be patchy fog in a few valleys in the mornings. Expect typical winds at area terminals today and they will be slightly less on Friday due to stable high pressure overhead. Westerly winds are expected to increase a little bit over the weekend with possible mountain wave activity along and east of the Continental Divide.
