Strong and gusty northwest winds are expected through much of the week, with gale-force gusts expected over the far northern waters this afternoon through late tonight. Moderate period northwest swell continues to move through the waters this week, though shortens in period to around 8-10 seconds near Wednesday. Light, longer period (18 seconds) southerly swell will also be present through the week.

SYNOPSIS

Dry conditions are here to stay with a gradual warming trend through midweek, peaking on Wednesday and/or Thursday. Onshore flow increases toward the end of the week; cooling temperatures near the coast as marine stratus returns.

SHORT TERM
(Today and tonight)

A high pressure ridge aloft will center off the California coast with low-level ridging locating across the northeast Pacific. As lower pressures develop inland this will bring a modest pressure gradient and light onshore (N-NW) winds today. Given the ridging influence temperatures inland will warm into the 70s this afternoon with 60s along the coast. Readings tonight will drop into the upper 40s to lower 50s.

LONG TERM
(Wednesday through Monday)

The upper ridge will gain prominence on Wednesday and Thursday bringing milder temperatures to the region. High in the warmer inland valleys will top out in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with 60s to around 70 along the coast and bays.

The ridge will flatten thereafter in response to a weak perturbation translating through the mean westerly flow with stronger onshore flow and cooler temperatures. The ridge looks to rebuild by early next week with a slight warming trend. However onshore winds will keep things cooler by the coast. Dry conditions will prevail.

VFR through the TAF period for the vast majority of terminals.
Expect clear skies and onshore breezy winds this afternoon. Winds ease into the evening to become light and slightly offshore for most terminals. North Bay terminals are likely to see a return of fog and IFR/LIFR conditions in the mid to late morning of Wednesday.
Monterey Bay terminals are likely to see MVFR/IFR conditions from fog development, and perhaps just a FEW to SCT low clouds over the terminals. Otherwise, VFR returns once more in the late morning and afternoon of Wednesday.

Vicinity of SFO...VFR through the TAF period. Winds out of the W/NW today and breezy, but becoming light and variable in the overnight hours. A FEW low clouds may drift over the terminal as clouds build over the bay waters.

SFO Bridge Approach...Models show low clouds developing over the SF bay waters in the early morning of Wednesday. Clouds likely to be SCT-BKN.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR through the early morning of Wednesday with onshore winds. Model show fog developing towards the mid morning hours and seem to indicate LIFR conditions. However, given the potential presence of low clouds, thoughts are that fog development may be limited to MVFR/IFR conditions at most. Have reflected this in the TAF, though this will be something to watch in future updates.
