Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 312 AM HST Wed Sep 23 2020

SYNOPSIS. A band of showers will spread west across the islands through tomorrow morning. Much drier weather will return by tomorrow evening. Moderate easterly trade winds will strengthen through tomorrow as a high far northwest of the area shifts southeast. Winds will weaken again late this week. Gentle winds with widespread sea and land breezes will prevail much of next week.

DISCUSSION. A surface ridge north of the area is producing moderate easterly trade winds across the islands. A band of showery low clouds extends about 300 miles east from over the Big Island of Hawaii. Satellite and radar loops show mostly cloudy skies and numerous showers over the windward side of the Big Island and Maui and partly cloudy skies and isolated showers elsewhere. As the cloud band spreads west through tomorrow morning wetter weather will spread over the smaller islands. The showers will be most widespread over windward areas. Rainfall amounts will be greatest over the Big Island, tapering down toward Oahu and Kauai. A ridge aloft will remain over the islands limiting the amount of rainfall, especially for leeward areas. Drier weather will spread back over the area starting tomorrow morning.

The trade winds will strengthen a bit over the next couple of days as a surface high far northwest of the islands moves southeast. The trades will weaken again late in the week as the high moves off to the east. Starting early next week a ridge trailing west from the high will shift south ahead of a front approaching from the northwest. The trade winds will become light to moderate allowing daytime sea breezes and nighttime land breezes to become widespread. The sea breezes will produce afternoon clouds and spotty showers, but a ridge aloft will keep the atmosphere stable, so rainfall will be light. Nighttime land breezes will bring clearing skies overnight.

AVIATION. Light to locally moderate trade winds will persist through 24 hours and beyond. The air mass over the eastern third of the state is expected to become increasingly moist and slightly unstable-- thus increasing the potential for locally heavy showers.

Multiple bands of showers embedded in the trade wind flow can be seen on satellite imagery approaching the main Hawaiian Islands from the east. Periods of MVFR CIG and VIS are to be expected in passing showers, especially along windward slopes and coasts.

AIRMET Sierra has been issued for mountain obscuration across Windward Big Island. Conditions are expected to become widespread by morning and persist into early afternoon.

For Leeward and Interior Big Island, gentle land breezes will give way to light sea breezes this afternoon. Afternoon cumulus build-ups will redevelop over the island's interior by late afternoon and linger through the evening hours.

MARINE. Trade winds are expected to get a boost today through Friday as a new high builds north of the area. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) remains in effect for the typical windier waters near Maui County and the Big Island. Expect winds to drop below SCA levels by Saturday, with light winds expected by the early part of the new week.

Still waiting for the new long period north swell to show at the buoys. NWPS and WW3 still show the swell building today, peaking tonight/tomorrow with surf below advisory levels for north facing shores. This swell will then subside through Saturday. A few long period south and southwest swells will keep surf along south facing shores near the summer time average. The bump in trade winds over the next couple of days could result in a bit of an increase in our trade wind surf, but expect that to diminish this weekend as trades weaken. With winds expected to remain low into next week, the next boost for east facing shores would be early next week as a result of swell generated by Tropical Cyclone Lowell currently in the Eastern Pacific.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. .Small Craft Advisory until 6 AM Friday for Maalaea Bay, the Pailolo and Alenuihaha Channels and waters south of the Big Island.

DISCUSSION . Donaldson AVIATION . Bedal MARINE . M Ballard

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.
