Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 1012 AM HST Mon Oct 26 2020

SYNOPSIS. Light winds and a somewhat unsettled weather pattern will prevail this week, with a potent front expected to move across the islands the next couple of days. An area of low pressure is then expected to linger just north of the islands during the second half of the week, maintaining the potential for unsettled weather, including heavy showers and thunderstorms. A Flash Flood Watch currently posted for Oahu and Kauai County may need to be expanded to other islands later.

DISCUSSION. The details of the forecast are rife with uncertainty as a sharp trough aloft drives a surface front across the island chain over the next couple of days. As the trough cuts off into a slow-moving closed low aloft just N of the islands later in the week, an attendant surface low is expected to develop. This will keeping changeable winds and weather in the forecast, and trade winds absent.

Radar imagery currently shows strong thunderstorms over waters W of Niihau, with these echoes generally trending toward the E, while heavy showers are increasing in coverage about 50-100 miles S of Kauai, generally moving N. Model guidance is generally unaware of the current state of the nearby convection, which immediately leads to some doubts about their ability to anticipate the short-term evolution of the ongoing convection, without mentioning the longer term outlook being even more muddled.

Having said that, we generally anticipate that the sharp trough aloft currently seen on water vapor imagery to the W of Kauai will translate eastward over the next 2 days, with associated divergence aloft syncing with surface convergence associated with a front. The ingredients for heavy rainfall are expected to maximize over Kauai County and Oahu in the short term, and a Flash Flood Watch (FFA) remains in effect. As the front and trough aloft move E, they may remain sufficiently potent to warrant an expansion of the FFA. Uncertainty as to where/when/if heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will occur, and be prepared for the potential for dramatic changes to the forecast over the coming days.

AVIATION. A low pressure system and cold front approaching Hawaii from the northwest will bring periods of showers and MVFR conditions to the western half of the state over the next several days. Shower activity will increase ahead of the front this afternoon for Niihau and Kauai and later tonight for Oahu. Isolated IFR conditions are also possible in heavy showers along with isolated thunderstorms. This low pressure system will also keep light and variable winds in the forecast for all islands. Onshore sea breezes will form over each island in the afternoon/early evening with inland clouds and showers, followed by offshore land breezes overnight.

Low cloud ceilings and showers will likely produce Tempo Mountain Obscurations over the next several days, mainly over the western islands of Kauai and Oahu, but no AIRMETs are currently in effect.

MARINE. A ridge near Kauai will bring southeast flow across the area with the strongest winds east of Maui and the Big Island. A nearly stationary front now in the far offshore waters which will bring the chance of heavy rain and thunderstorms through much of the week.

A moderate sized northwest swell will continue to drop through Wednesday. Another moderate size long period northwest swell may arrive late Saturday. A small northeast swell will fill in today and linger through Tuesday. There will be a series of small, long period south swells through the week.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Flash Flood Watch from this evening through Thursday afternoon for Niihau-Kauai-Oahu.
