SYNOPSIS
Light and variable winds will continue through Thursday, with mostly clear nights and mornings giving way to some afternoon interior clouds and a few showers. The exception will be on Kauai, where a weak cold front will stall, bringing clouds and showers tonight and Thursday. Trade winds will become locally breezy as they gradually strengthen Friday into the weekend, delivering brief showers to windward areas.

DISCUSSION
A surface ridge over the islands continues to support a light wind regime, favoring an easterly direction near the Big Island, and a westerly direction near Kauai. Afternoon sea breezes were able to override the large-scale winds, which led to cloud development over interior and upslope areas, while the majority of coastal locations remained mostly sunny. Little rainfall has been observed, although an early afternoon mPing report of rain from near Puhi on Kauai was well-aligned with a few showers in the area. A few showers noted over waters NW of Kauai are associated with a weak cold front that is moving SE at about 10 mph. The front is marked by a 100 mile wide band of scattered to broken showery low clouds, with its leading edge about 20 miles NW of the Na Pali coast.

The short-term forecast anticipates that developing land breezes will clear skies over most areas in the hours following sunset tonight, with a dry night anticipated. The exception will be Kauai, as the weak frontal boundary drifts SE, and stalls shortly thereafter. Increased low-level moisture convergence associated with the front will lead to enhanced low cloudiness and a few showers over Kauai into Thursday, although there's a chance this boundary makes it as far S as Oahu overnight. Otherwise and elsewhere, expect a general repeat of today's weather as the surface ridge remains nearby.

As the front stalls and slowly dissipates Thursday and Friday, the surface ridge will rebuild N of the islands, leading to a gradually strengthening trade wind flow that will become locally breezy over the weekend. The returning trades will tend to focus low clouds over windward areas, but as they remain light, some leeward afternoon clouds may continue to develop in response to sea breeze convergence. A strengthening mid-level ridge extending over the islands from the NW will support a stable island atmosphere, with the focus for limited clouds and showers shifting entirely back to windward areas during nights and mornings over the weekend. Trade wind speeds may ease again by the middle of next week.

AVIATION
Mostly VFR conditions expected over the area as the weak land and sea breeze pattern continues to impact the region. Expect clouds and scattered light showers to be focused over island interiors then weaken and taper off after sunset. Brief MVFR ceilings or visibilities are likely in showers. Trades are expected to return tomorrow from east to west across the state. Some locations could still see sea breezes Thursday afternoon.

No AIRMETS are currently in effect.

MARINE
Light southeasterly to variable winds will continue through Thursday. High pressure north of the islands then builds eastward bringing a return to moderate trades by Friday and locally fresh trades for the weekend.

Moderate NW (310-320) medium period swell is building into area waters today and is already bringing small to borderline moderate surf to north-facing shores and small surf to west-facing shores.
This swell will transition to a more NNW (340-350) direction during Thursday as it peaks firmly below High Surf Advisory criteria before slowly fading into the weekend. Energy emanating out of the SE quadrant will maintain small surf along south-facing shores. Small short period, choppy surf will be focused along southeast-facing shores of Maui and the Big Island where winds are more southeasterly. Otherwise, east-facing shores will see minimal chop until trades return this weekend.
