KEY MESSAGES
Updated at 1200 PM CDT Wed Jun 18 2025
- A Heat Advisory will continue until this evening for the Chisos Basin, Central and Lower Brewster County, and the Presidio Valley.
- Temperatures gradually decrease towards normal over the next few days.
- Rain chances begin increasing again next Sunday, accompanied by cooler temperatures.
SHORT TERM
(Today through Thursday afternoon)
Issued at 320 AM CDT Wed Jun 18 2025
Current surface observations show a low over southeast New Mexico and this feature will be the story for today. The low and associated front will continue to move to the southeast through this morning and into this afternoon. Hi res guidance shows the low stalling around Loving and Winkler counties and the attached front stalling in the northern Permian Basin. Depending on where the low and front stall during the afternoon will influence what afternoon highs end up being for much of the Permian Basin. Blended guidance has upper 90s across southeast New Mexico and low 100s in the central Permian Basin and areas southward. The hottest temperatures stay south of I- 10 where southern Presidio and Brewster counties see temperatures reaching near 110F. Thus, have kept the inherited Heat Advisory as is. A few showers and storms may develop over the Davis Mountains and areas to the south, but will be isolated in nature.
Lows stay just above normal in the low to mid 70s for most. Into Thursday, the front sags southward and temperatures across the area settle in the mid to upper 90s. Areas along the Rio Grande still reach into the low to mid 100s. With broad high pressure still in place, rain chances stay low(<10%).

LONG TERM
(Thursday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 320 AM CDT Wed Jun 18 2025
The broad ridge that has brought warmer temperatures to the region begins to gradually move to the east and settle over the southeast US. Each day after Friday, temperatures slide towards normal with much of the region sitting in the low to mid 90s and the higher terrain in the upper 80s. Upper level troughing holds to the northwest and glancing short waves add broad ascent to the environment and will bring rain chances up across the western half of the CWA Much like the previous forecast, rain chances stay between 20-40% from SUnday into the end of the extended. With this still being several days, the details on how much rain and where will become clearer in future forecast updates.
