DISCUSSION
Issued at 317 AM EDT Fri May 23 2025
After a burst of activity near the Upper Keys last night, weather quieted down across the Florida Keys. Temperatures across the Keys decreased to the lower 80s, and the RAWS at Big Pine Key measured lows in the mid 70s. Radiational cooling is in effect. Dew Points remain in the mid 70s across the Keys, so muggy near summer conditions will continue for the foreseeable future. The KBYX radar does not detect any rain across the Keys during the early morning hours, and GOES-East Nighttime Microphysics observations highlight only occasional cumulus clouds over the nearshore waters. The forecast for today appears to be another normal summer day across the Keys.
Switching to the synoptic perspective, a well developed longwave ridge over the Yucatan Peninsula will keep dry air over the Florida Keys. Winds are forecast to veer southeast as high pressure begins to build over Ontario with a weak low level ridge forming over the southeastern United States. Southeasterly breezes mean a return to near normal rain and thunderstorm chances across the island chain for the start of next week. Areas of uncertainty will involve exactly where showers begin to develop, how much breezes freshen across the offshore waters, and how much dry air in the upper atmosphere will cap showers. Check back later, because a shift to summer patterns means more short lived, mesoscale-driven weather.
MARINE
Issued at 317 AM EDT Fri May 23 2025 No watches or warnings are in effect for the Florida Keys nearshore and offshore waters. From synopsis, light to gentle breezes across the Florida Keys will prevail through Saturday.
Shower and thunderstorm chances increase over the weekend into next week as a low pressure system over the eastern CONUS moves into the Atlantic and breezes shift southeasterly. Breezes may freshen to moderate to fresh over the Straits of Florida early next week.
