Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Brownsville TX 1219 PM CDT Tue May 13 2025
New AVIATION
SHORT TERM
(Today through Wednesday)
Issued at 313 AM CDT Tue May 13 2025
A building 500mb ridge over South Texas will provide subsidence with well above normal daytime temperatures and breezy to windy conditions though Wednesday. At the surface, high pressure across the Gulf and low pressure across the Plains will produce an enhanced pressure gradient over the region through the period.
Abundant sunshine and breezy southerly flow allow high temperatures today and Wednesday will climb into the upper 90s to the triple digits across much of the area, except near the coast and along the beaches. The hot temperatures will support a Moderate Risk (level 2 of 4) of heat illness across much of the area for today. The heat risk for Wednesday is a Moderate for the east portions of the CWA, while a Major Risk (level 3 of 4) of heat illness across the Rio Grande Plains. Low temperatures tonight will be in the the low to mid 70s, which is a few degrees above normal.
More information on Heat Risk can be found at wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/heatrisk/
Gusty conditions will bring a Moderate Risk of Rip Currents Tuesday through Wednesday to local beaches.
LONG TERM
(Wednesday night through Monday)
Issued at 313 AM CDT Tue May 13 2025
The subtropical ridge holds a dry and hot summer-like pattern across Deep South Texas through the long term period, and potentially into late May. The ridge pivots out across the Gulf next weekend, which may help bring back some cloud cover and cut temperatures a degree or two, but increase humidity.
Expect record to near record high temperatures Thursday and Friday, but more importantly, Major (level 3 of 4) to Extreme (level 4 of 4) Heat Risk every afternoon. A brief Wind Advisory may be needed on Thursday across the lower valley, with breezy afternoons into next week. The combination of increased winds and lower humidity may pose an increased fire weather threat Thursday afternoon between US281 and US77, and a Fire Danger Statement may be needed.
AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1214 PM CDT Tue May 13 2025
VFR conditions are expected at all airports. Winds are expected to be southeasterly and gusty up to 30 knots.

Slight seas early this morning will build to moderate today and will remain elevated through the period. Small Craft Exercise Caution conditions are likely on the Laguna Madre and Gulf waters today.
Small Craft Advisories are possible later today, especially on the Laguna Madre and the nearshore Gulf waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for the Gulf waters from 7 PM this evening through 1 PM Wednesday due to strong winds and high seas.
