Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 351 AM EDT Sat Jul 4 2020

DISCUSSION. A broad shortwave trough will meander around the central Gulf Coast through Monday, while surface high pressure holds across the Florida Straits. This will support westerly low level flow across the forecast area, with deep moisture over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico favoring scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms developing over the coastal waters and moving onshore throughout the day. Increasing moisture Sunday and Monday will lead to building rain chances, with the possibility of training thunderstorms causing flooding rains, mainly across the Nature Coast.

The surface ridge will lift north into the Florida Peninsula Tuesday and Wednesday, setting up light low level flow. With lingering deep moisture associated with the shortwave, scattered to numerous thunderstorms will be expected each day, with the highest chances over the interior with the sea breeze collision.

Thursday and Friday, the shortwave trough will deepen north of Florida, with an associated surface low displacing the surface ridge back to the south, and setting up stronger westerly flow once again. Under this pattern, scattered showers and storms are expected to develop over the waters each morning, shifting onshore and becoming more numerous through the afternoon, with the greatest storm coverage expected inland.

AVIATION. Mostly VFR conditions will hold through the morning hours, although a few showers will be possible moving onshore, and could cause brief flight category restrictions. Thunderstorms will continue to develop during the afternoon, with the highest chances around the Tampa Bay near KTPA, KPIE, KSRQ, and KLAL. Showers and a few thunderstorms will continue to be possible moving onshore around the Tampa Bay area TAF sites into the overnight hours.

MARINE. High pressure will hold south of the waters through early next week, with west to southwest winds generally remaining less than 15 knots. The exception will be locally higher winds in the vicinity of daily showers and thunderstorms, and increasing moisture Sunday and Monday will lead to more numerous thunderstorms. The ridge of high pressure will lift north across the central waters Tuesday and Wednesday, resulting in easterly winds over the southern waters.

FIRE WEATHER. No relative humidity concerns.
