Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 420 AM EDT Tue May 11 2021

SHORT TERM (TDY-THU). High pressure continues to dominate across the Peninsula keeping light southerly winds, warm, and muggy conditions over the region. These parameters will support areas of patchy fog early this morning, but the fog should dissipate after sunrise. Clearing skies will allow for some good daytime heating, which combined with the very moist airmass over us, and the afternoon sea breeze will result in showers and thunderstorms, especially over the interior.

This afternoon, highs will be near 90 degrees in most areas with heat indices staying a hair short from 100 degrees, so keep this in mind if you are planning any outdoor activities.

On Wednesday, similar atmospheric ingredients will be in place, except there will be an increase in upper level support, which will support more widespread storm coverage. Winds will remain relatively light and from a southerly direction and afternoon highs will stay in the 90s during this time.

A frontal boundary currently stalled to our north will begin to slowly move south early on Thursday. The upper level support from this system, combined with the ample moisture and available instability will support showers and thunderstorms through much of Thursday. These storms could be slightly stronger and could produce frequent lightning and gusty winds. Additionally, the increase in cloud coverage will keep temperatures a few degrees lower.

LONG TERM(FRI-MON). The aforementioned front will slowly move south on Friday. Skies should be clearing out by the morning hours as much drier and slightly cooler temperatures. On Saturday, high pressure starts building back up keeping clear skies and warming temperatures back up keeping us rain free for a day. Then, stalled boundary to our south will bring additional rain chances into early next week.

AVIATION. VFR conditions expected with some intermittent MVFR ceilings are expected across most terminals. Light southerly winds will prevail this morning, but will become more northwesterly through today. Also, patchy fog will be possible at KPGD and KLAL. There will be chances for isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, especially across southern and interior TAF sites.

MARINE. High pressure will continue to dominate across the Gulf waters keeping relatively light southerly winds with an afternoon sea breeze through Wednesday. Then, a frontal boundary will move into the Gulf waters bringing chances of showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday.

FIRE WEATHER. Ridge of high pressure will keep very moist conditions and relatively light southerly winds in place through the period. The afternoon sea breeze combined with the ample moisture will support afternoon thunderstorms through Wednesday, especially over interior fire districts. By Thursday, a frontal boundary will bring additional rain chances and the potential for some stronger storms. The system will move south through Friday and winds will become northerly pushing drier conditions going into the weekend.
