Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Brownsville TX 627 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025

New AVIATION

SHORT TERM
(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 332 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025

A mid-level ridge is expected to continue to influence the weather for Deep South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley for the short term forecast period. This will mean that the rain-free conditions are expected to continue along with slightly above normal temperatures as well. At the surface, southeasterly winds will also continue to persist through the period with some gusty winds possible due to the pressure gradient between the high pressure over the Gulf and the low pressure over the Sierra Madre. The onshore flow will also allow for more moisture advection which in turn will bring the heat indices to around 105 for today. While this is below the Heat Advisory criteria, the heat risk for the area is generally moderate (level 2 of 4).

As for the temperatures, the highs for today are expected to be in the 90s for most of Deep South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley, while areas along the coast would be in the upper 80s. The high temperatures for Saturday are expected to be similar, except that some parts of the Upper Valley could be in the triple digits. As for the low temperatures for tonight, they are expected to be in the 70s.

Lastly, a low risk for rip currents is expected at the local beaches through Saturday.

LONG TERM
(Saturday night through Thursday)
Issued at 332 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025

The subtropical ridge looks to weaken early next week, allowing a series of upper-level shortwaves to traverse Texas Through the period. Southeasterly surface winds look to persist through the period, advecting additional moisture to the area. Combined with enhanced forcing from the aforementioned shortwaves, this will support increased cloud cover and rain chances beginning Monday night and continuing through the end of the period.

Afternoon high temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 90s Sunday, gradually falling to the low to mid 90s by the end of the period. Heat indices could approach 110 for a couple hours each afternoon from Sunday through Tuesday, likely remaining just below Heat Advisory thresholds. With the increased cloud cover and rain chances later in the week, heat will likely be less of a concern.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 621 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025

Mostly VFR conditions are expected for the majority of the TAF period at all TAF sites. Some breezy southeasterly winds are possible during the afternoon hours, but winds should weaken by the evening. There is a good possibility of low-level clouds moving over the area later tonight with the southeasterly flow that could see MVFR ceilings return to the region.

MARINE
Issued at 332 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025

Today through Saturday...Light to moderate southeasterly winds and low to moderate seas are expected through Saturday, however towards the later part of Saturday afternoon the winds could become more gustier with an enhanced pressure gradient over the Laguna Madre and the nearshore Gulf waters. This could result in Small Craft Exercise Caution for those areas for Saturday afternoon.

Saturday night through Thursday...Small Craft Should Exercise Caution headlines will likely be needed early next week as tightening pressure gradients along the Lower Texas Coast support stronger winds and moderates seas. Conditions look to improve slightly by mid week, with light to moderate winds and moderate seas continuing through the remainder of the period. Rain chances look to increase around mid week, with around a 20-30% chance for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday through the end of the period.
