Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 755 AM EDT Fri Sep 25 2020

AVIATION. A mix of VFR/IFR cigs will continue through the next couple of hours for a few sites, but then VFR should prevail through the rest of the forecast period outside of any showers that form this afternoon. The best rain chances will be for inland areas. Light and variable winds this morning will become southwest to northwest this afternoon.

Prev Discussion. /issued 402 AM EDT Fri Sep 25 2020/

DISCUSSION . Broad mid-level ridging extends from near the Bahamas west- southwestward through the Florida Straits and into the southeast Gulf of Mexico. The surface reflection of this ridging is centered near Bermuda and ridges southwest over Florida. A little farther to the north, mid-level troughing and the remnants of Tropical Storm Beta move eastward through the southern Ohio River Valley through the day on Friday. As the trough and remnants of TS Beta move off the mid-Atlantic coast by Saturday afternoon, weak high pressure builds over the Florida peninsula through Monday afternoon. Diurnal sea breeze showers and storms can be expected each afternoon through Sunday. By late Monday into Tuesday, a cold front approaches the Florida peninsula from the northwest bringing scattered showers and storms to the area through early Wednesday morning. The most welcome feature over the next week will be some much cooler and drier air in the wake of this front by next Wednesday and continuing through the end of next week. Daytime highs for Wednesday through Friday will top out in the low to mid 80's with dew points in the 60's on Thursday and Friday. With decreasing rain chances behind the front, combined with lower temps and dew points, we will see some of the most comfortable weather that we have seen in the past 6 months.

AVIATION . Overall VFR conditions expected through the period. Light east- southeast winds around 5 knots expected through the morning, then turning to a west-southwest onshore flow by the afternoon as the sea breeze sets up over the west coast of Florida. Will hold VCTS between 17-00Z. Some brief periods of low CIGs and VSBY as well as gusty winds will be possible in passing storms during the afternoon.

MARINE . Southeast winds around 10-15 knots expected today as high pressure ridges over southern Florida. Weak high pressure moves over the eastern gulf on Saturday producing variable winds around 5-10 knots. Scattered showers and storms expected each day through Monday. A cold front moves through on Tuesday bringing increased chances for showers and storms as well as gusty winds and building seas. Winds increase to the north-northwest around 10-15 knots in the wake of this front by the middle of next week.

FIRE WEATHER . Scattered showers and thunderstorms can be expected each day through end of the week and into the weekend. These showers and storms combined with high humidities and winds below 10 knots each day will preclude any fire weather concerns through the beginning of next week. Some drier air moves into the region by the middle of next week in the wake of a cold front, but is not expected to drop below any red flag threshold at this time.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
