New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, AVIATION, MARINE

SHORT TERM
(Today through Wednesday)
Issued at 243 AM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024

Key Messages:

▶ Heat indices in excess of 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday

▶ Patchy fog possible in the Victoria Crossroads and portions of the Coastal Plains

Conditions are expected to be pretty warm today and tomorrow as we are being influenced by an area of high pressure in the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures will climb to the lower to upper 90s in portion of the Coastal Plains and Brush Country. This combined with high RH values across the area will allow for heat indices to be around 100 degrees. The same story will persist into Wednesday with some heat indices out west approaching 105 degrees. Be sure to stay hydrated as this trend will likely persist through the end of the week. There will be a front that will approach from the north during the day Tuesday going into Wednesday. This front will likely remain to the north and stall over Central Texas due to the influence of the high over the Gulf. Weakening wind this evening will open the door for a brief period of patch fog across the Victoria Crossroads and Coastal Plains as low level moisture becomes trapped beneath the inversion.

LONG TERM
(Wednesday night through next Monday)
Issued at 243 AM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024

Key Message:

▶ There is a Marginal Risk of Severe Thunderstorms across the Brush Country Thursday.
▶ Cold front late Saturday with a medium chance (40-60%) of showers and thunderstorms

We open up the long term with an upper level ridge anchored over the Gulf and a stalled cold front draped across the Hill Country. As we head through the day Thursday, a stout H5 shortwave will move through the region while pushing the high well south of the region.
This will open the door for a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, generally across the Brush Country during the afternoon hours Thursday. SPC currently has a Marginal Risk for Severe Thunderstorms for our western counties. In the wake of the shortwave, upper level flow will become quasi-zonal as we head into the weekend. Meanwhile, a deepening low pressure system over Canada will eject a cold front south across the Plains. The front looks to briefly stall to our north on Saturday but a passing H5 shortwave provides enough of a push to send it through our area. There are still some timing differences with FROPA at this point but general consensus is leaning towards late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Chances for showers and thunderstorms will begin to increase through the day Saturday, settling into the 40-60% chance range late Saturday night. In the wake of the front, we will hang onto some low end rain chances as moisture lingers across the region.

Taking a look at our temps, we will continue to warm up through the work week with highs nearing the triple digits out west. Our weekend cold front will knock highs back into the mid 70s to low 80s Sunday/Monday.

AVIATION
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 243 AM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024

MVFR conditions are expected tonight across all sites as winds decrease to under 20 knots. All sites except for VCT should improve to VFR tomorrow between 16-20z while VCT remains MVFR throughout the day with due to low ceilings. Winds will increase once again tomorrow, however, they should remain at or below 25 knots. MVFR conditions could creep back in to play at some sites towards the end of this forecast cycle.
