New UPDATE, MARINE
UPDATE
Issued at 826 AM EST Sat Dec 2 2023
Fog has been the theme of the morning. A low-level ESE flow has been advecting warm, moist air back across the FL peninsula. With light overnight winds, this allowed enough radiational cooling to support the development of fog. Generally, this has been short-lived at any one site, and conditions are now improving area-wide with the sun up. By mid-morning, most of the fog should be gone as daytime heating erodes the layer away.
However, the storm system to the north looks to keep some, mid-level clouds and high level clouds in play for the day, due to the enhanced moisture and instability aloft. This really shouldn't yield much in the way of rain, but should keep things more cloudy than not.
The only morning forecast adjustment was to highlight additional fog for tomorrow morning. With little change in conditions, there is a pretty good likelihood that residents will wake up to more fog tomorrow. Otherwise, the forecast looks on track.
DISCUSSION
Issued at 248 AM EST Sat Dec 2 2023
The below average temperatures from just a few days ago seem like a distant memory as heat and humidity return to the area. However, cooler temperatures will return next week once the cold front will begin to descend towards the southeast and over FL. A few showers are possible with the passing of the cold front on Sunday, mainly for the nature coast. Once the cold front moves through, a cooler, drier air mass will move over the area, dropping temperatures and humidity. The drier, cooler air will through the week with high temperatures staying below 80 and low temperatures dropping down into the upper 30s/low 40s on the coldest morning. Overall, looks to be a pleasant week.
AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 636 AM EST Sat Dec 2 2023
Tricky aviation forecast this morning with fog advecting in from the ESE to coastal sites around Tampa Bay especially. Across SWFL, any fog appears to be more patchy and shallow in nature. A period of LIFR is possible this morning as this rolls through, with conditions then gradually improving to VFR thereafter. Have opted to show this happening more slowly, with the increase in winds likely to start lifting this over the next couple hours, but this tends to happen slower than guidance suggests, so have opted for a period of MVFR before VFR returns. Afterwards, no major concerns until overnight tonight. Conditions look favorable for more impacts once again towards tomorrow morning before an approaching cold front arrives.
MARINE
Issued at 826 AM EST Sat Dec 2 2023
Fog that formed over land has moved over Tampa Bay and adjacent Coastal Waters this morning, but should be clearing out within the next hour or so. Tomorrow morning could see a similar setup where land fog moves over adjacent coastal waters briefly close to sunrise, reducing visibilities for mariners. Otherwise, SSW winds will begin to increase through the day and stay around 10- 15 kts before diminishing overnight. A cold front will approach the area Sunday bringing a slight chance of showers, mainly along the nature coast. Once the front moves through, winds will shift to the NW, but should remain below headline criteria.
FIRE WEATHER
Issued at 248 AM EST Sat Dec 2 2023
No major fire weather concerns at this time thanks to increased moisture and as a cold front approaches the area this weekend.
Behind the front dry air will filter in, decreasing RH values, however they should stay above criteria levels.
