SHORT TERM
(Today through Tuesday)
Issued at 339 AM CDT Mon May 12 2025
Key Messages:
- Near normal temperatures today, above normal Tuesday
Onshore flow returns today advecting a warmer airmass as an upper- level ridge begins to move into the region. PWAT values continue to range in the bottom 10% of climatology (0.5-0.8") through this evening. As we head into late tonight and tomorrow, onshore flow will strengthen increasing our moisture closer to our daily mean value for this time of the year (1.33"). As our moisture increases, the aforementioned upper-level ridge will continue moving eastward with the ridge axis over West Texas Tuesday. Increased subsidence from the ridge and the increase in moisture will promote heat index values between 100-108 degrees for most of South Texas. Rain chances today and Tuesday will remain near zero due to the limited moisture and lack of lift.
LONG TERM
(Tuesday night through next Sunday)
Issued at 339 AM CDT Mon May 12 2025
Key Messages:
- Moderate to Major risk of heat related impacts expected during the week.
- Heat Advisories will likely be needed for portions of South Texas by mid week.
The long term is continuing to stay on track through the remainder of the forecast period. This will be thanks to the ridge that is expected to continue building over the next week. This will lead to hot temperatures persisting into next week with the hottest day being Wednesday. Highs will soar into the 90s and 100s across much of the region with portions of the Brush Country climbing as high as 113 in some spots. This will likely necessitate a Heat Advisory though, the NBM ensemble still has a non-zero chance for temperatures to climb to 115. This will continue to be monitored for a potential upgrade if necessary though the message stays the same.
With hot temperatures expected make sure to plan accordingly by drinking fluids, making sure to check those backseats for your children, and avoiding prolonged periods in the heat. For other heat safety tips be sure to visit weather.gov/safety/heat.
No precipitation can be expected through next week with the lack of moisture in the region. The ridge influence will keep us essentially dry through the period.
