New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, MARINE

SHORT TERM
(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 201 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025

Key Messages:

- Moderate to Extreme Risk of Heat-Related Impacts Over Portions of the Brush Country and Coastal Plains

After a morning with patchy fog across the Coastal Plains, the mid to upper level ridge will build into the area today. Highs will climb into the mid 90s to the low 100s today. Heat index values will approach or reach 110 over portions of the Coastal Plains and Brush Country. While this does technically reach the criteria for a Heat Advisory, it looks like this will not be widespread enough to actually issue the headline. Please do not be fooled by the lack of the Heat Advisory product--temperatures will be quite warm and heat index values will make things feel even warmer. Please use caution if outdoors and remember to remain hydrated and take frequent breaks. More heat safety information can be found at weather.gov/safety/heat-during.

Conditions look like they will be similar for Saturday, with perhaps a bit more of an areal extent. We will be strongly considering a Heat Advisory for Saturday.

LONG TERM
(Saturday night through next Thursday)
Issued at 201 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025

Key Messages:

- Moderate to Extreme risk of heat related impacts across South Texas through the weekend into Memorial Day.

- Low to medium chance of showers and thunderstorms all next week.

Although the overall Extended forecast remains on track for this upcoming week, models have backed out in regards to the frontal passage early in the week. A series of mid to upper level disturbances and above normal moisture will contribute to daily rain and thunderstorm chances across much of South Texas. The most active period is shaping to be Tuesday night into Wednesday when guidance is now indicating the weak frontal boundary to at its closest. Rain chances will generally be low to at times medium (20-45%) starting Monday and continuing through the end of the week.

The main headlines, however, continue to be the very warm conditions for this Memorial Day weekend. The HeatRisk will be at Moderate to Extreme levels Sunday and Monday afternoons, and at Moderate to Major Tuesday and Wednesday before decreasing late week. Heat indices will range around 110-114 Sunday and Monday which may prompt Heat Advisories, particularly across the western Coastal Plains and Brush Country. Rain chances and cloud coverage will then limit heat index values to around 105-110 the rest of the week.

**If planning outdoor activities this Holiday weekend, closely monitor the weather conditions and prepare to adjust plans to accommodate frequent breaks to avoid heat-related illnesses. Always, practice heat safety: drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, loose- fitting and light-colored clothing, and apply sunscreen. Never leave anyone in a vehicle unattended and don't forget to check the backseat!

AVIATION
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 1050 PM CDT Thu May 22 2025

MVFR conditions are expected to prevail across much of S TX, as clouds spread across the region through the overnight hours.
Brief periods of patchy fog toward the pre-dawn hours will lead to visibilities in the MVFR to IFR range. ALI has the highest chance of VSBYs briefly dropping to 1/2SM toward early Friday morning around sunrise. All S TX TAF sites are expected to be VFR by mid morning Friday. Surface winds will generally be 5-10 knots from the southeast and south overnight, then restrengthen to 10-15 knots with gusts around 20 knots by Friday afternoon.

MARINE
Issued at 201 AM CDT Fri May 23 2025

Gentle to moderate (BF 3-4) southeasterly winds will increase to moderate (BF 4) this afternoon, then persist through Saturday morning. A moderate to at times fresh (BF 4-5) onshore breeze can be expected Saturday afternoon through Monday night, before decreasing to gentle to moderate (BF 3-4) levels around mid-week.
There is a low to medium (20-45%) chance for showers and thunderstorms Monday through Friday next week.
