Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 209 PM EDT Thu Jul 29 2021

DISCUSSION. Weak high pressure on the surface ridges over southwest Florida producing a west-southwest wind flow over the region this afternoon. This is helping to keep the area in a warm and moist environment, which is apparent in the 12Z morning sounding showing a PWAT of 2.29 inches. This abundant moisture has led to another day of slow moving showers and storms, primarily near the coast and over the gulf waters. The latest HRRR guidance has more showers and storms pushing farther inland this afternoon.

The surface ridging will lift northward and broad upper ridging builds in from the northwest by early Friday as the troughing lifts northeastward along the mid-Atlantic coast and New England. This will allow for some drier air with PWAT values ranging from 1.8-2.1 inches to replace the very moist atmosphere that is currently over the Florida peninsula. A predominant west-southwest wind will persist, but lower moisture will equate to slightly lower rain and storm chances each day through the weekend with POPs around 30-50 percent each day with the highest chances early morning over the eastern gulf and moving eastward through the day.

Another upper trough and weak frontal boundary moves into the southeast U.S. for the first part of next week. This will push the ridge over southern Florida once again and also bring increasing moisture to the region. So with all that being said, west-southwest onshore flow will prevail through the period with above average moisture through the end of the week, a slight decrease for the weekend and then very wet again for the first part of next week. As for temperatures, it's gonna be hot and very muggy. Overnight lows will only dip to the upper 70's to around 80 near the coast and daytime highs in the upper 80's to mid 90's. This heat combined with high humidity will lead to dangerous and very uncomfortable heat index values. Those working outside or doing outdoor activities should take frequent breaks inside and make sure you stay hydrated.

AVIATION. The day has started off on the wet side once again. Current radar has the SHRA and TSRA near Tampa Bay northward. Will hold VCTS at all terminals through around 22Z this evening. Winds will be out of the WSW at 10 knots of less, except in the vicinity of thunderstorms where gusty winds will be possible.

MARINE. It has been a very wet start to the day once again over the eastern gulf waters. Scattered showers and storms will be possible each day with the highest coverage during the overnight and early morning hours before moving inland during the afternoon. Some of these storms will produce gusty winds, higher waves and dangerous lightning. All mariners should pay close attention to the weather and make sure to head back to safety when storms develop. Otherwise, winds remain less than 15 knots and seas 2 feet or less. This pattern will continue through the remainder of the week and into the weekend.

FIRE WEATHER. Scattered to numerous showers and storms expected each day through the week and into the weekend. West-southwest winds prevail as high pressure ridges over southern Florida. No fire weather concerns expected through the week. No significant fog is expected.
