Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tucson AZ 858 AM MST Sun Jul 5 2020

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will keep temperatures several degrees above average this week. We'll have just enough moisture for a few afternoon showers or thunderstorms near the international border.

DISCUSSION. The deeper moisture remains south of our area with just enough in place across SE AZ for a few buildups near the higher terrain near the border with Mexico. 12Z KTWC sounding showed precipitable water at 1 inch with a strong subsidence inversion near 500mb, and limited convective potential even with afternoon heating. No updates. Please see the previous discussion below for additional details.

AVIATION. Valid through 06/18Z. Isolated -TSRA near international border in the afternoon hours, including KOLS, KFHU and KDUG. FEW-BKN clouds 12k-15k ft MSL. Surface wind variable in direction generally under 12 kts, gusty in the afternoon. Aviation discussion not updated for TAF amendments.

FIRE WEATHER. Expect isolated thunderstorms southeast-to-south of Tucson Tuesday, Wednesday, and next Friday and Saturday during the afternoon and evening hours. Otherwise, dry conditions to prevail during this forecast period. Daytime minimum humidity mostly ranging from 15-30 percent with good overnight recoveries. Aside from brief gusty thunderstorm outflows, 20-foot will be mainly terrain driven at less than 15 mph.

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 216 AM MST Sun Jul 5 2020/ A clear down period for the monsoon is expected the next couple of days as the atmosphere just remains a bit too dry with lower level west to northwest continuing to advect in drier air. This will keep build-ups limited mainly to areas along the International border and along the White Mountains. With the drier air and mid/upper high near the AZ/NM border through Monday, temperatures will continue to be several degrees above normal.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, a modest increase in moisture is expected due to a Gulf surge, however the surge will remain fairly shallow. While PWAT values increase to around 1 to 1.4 inches from Tucson westward and that is typically enough for a decent amount of convection, given the depth of mid/upper level drier air and subsidence with the high pressure aloft nearby, it will tough to get much more than isolated shower and thunderstorm activity and that will occur primarily to the south and east of Tucson. With the uptick in moisture, temperatures may briefly drop to near normal levels during this period.

Starting on Thursday, confidence is increasing that the mid/upper level high will be intensifying with increasing heights heading into next weekend. However, there are still some differences in the guidance regarding the position of the high and whether it is closer to us or placed a little bit further east in New Mexico. Regardless, still a fairly quiet period with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms returning mainly south of Tucson Friday and Saturday as temperatures warm back up by a few degrees.

TWC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
