Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tucson AZ 216 AM MST Fri Sep 17 2021

SYNOPSIS. Increasing moisture into the weekend will bring a threat of showers and thunderstorms to parts of the area today and Saturday and to a less extent of Sunday. A weather system passing to the north will result in breezy winds Monday and a return to dry conditions.

DISCUSSION. Partly to mostly cloudy skies across the area this morning with radar showing a few light showers/virga across the southern half of the forecast associated with outflow boundary moving north. Dewpoints are up versus 24 hours ago and are mostly in the 40s to mid 50s. Precipitable water (PW) values ranged from 0.80" near the AZ/NM border to 1.25 western Pima county. Chance of light showers this morning mainly W and S of Tucson. Chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon into early this evening, mainly from Tucson W. A few strong storms possible along with outflows producing patchy areas of blowing dust. A few light showers will linger overnight into Saturday morning.

Saturday: Approaching upper level trof will push moisture plume east across the area with the eastern zones seeing a better chance of storms than today.

Sunday: Lingering moisture across the eastern half of forecast area for continued chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Next week: Drier westerly flow aloft on Monday will shunt moisture south across NW Mexico. Gradient increases for breezy conditions on Monday. Then high pressure will be over the area through Thursday. Could see a few weak low level intrusions of moisture next week bringing about afternoon cumulus fields.

High temperatures next 7 days will be at or slight above normal.
