Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tucson AZ 304 PM MST Thu Jul 29 2021

SYNOPSIS. Scattered to perhaps numerous storms are expected this evening into the weekend. High temperatures will run near to a few degrees below seasonal normals.

DISCUSSION. The circulation associated with the MCV which formed over southern AZ was helping focus storms across far western Pima and Yuma counties early this afternoon. To complicate matters, an upper low centered over northern Mexico will continue to track farther northwest and weaken over the next 36 hours. Difluence aloft ahead of the low should provide enough support for additional isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms through tonight. Latest models depicted the upper low centered over Sonora, Mexico just south of the International Border by Friday morning. Per collaboration call with WPC and surrounding offices, will post a Flash Flood Watch for central and western Pima county Friday afternoon through late Friday night. Thereafter, models showed the upper low lifting northward Friday night and mixing with a shortwave trough approaching the California coast. This will shift the widespread flash flood threat to areas mainly north and west of SE AZ. That said, the chance of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue through the weekend with signs of less activity early next week. High temperatures will remain near or slightly below seasonal normals.

AVIATION. Valid through 31/00Z. Expect SCT-BKN clouds 8k-12k ft AGL for most of the period with some higher clouds at times as well from storm anvils. This afternoon and evening scattered SHRA/TSRA will be possible area wide with some activity continuing through the overnight hours but with reduced coverage. The expect another round of storms Friday afternoon. Storm impacts include strong erratic wind gusts in excess of 30 knots, heavy downpours, lowered vsbys, and CIGS dropping to 5k-8k feet. Outside of TSRA outflows winds will be below 10 kts. Aviation discussion not updated for TAF amendments.

FIRE WEATHER. More widespread storm activity is expected today with development already beginning this afternoon and lasting into tonight. Another active day is anticipated for Friday before a downward trend in storm activity begins going into early next week when storm chances will mainly be from Tucson eastward. Storms will likely produce erratic, gusty winds and locally heavy downpours. RH values remain well above critical thresholds through early next week. Temps will remain near to slightly below normal. 20-foot winds will generally be less than 15 mph when not influenced by thunderstorms.

TWC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Flash Flood Watch from Friday afternoon through late Friday night for AZZ501-502.
