KEY MESSAGES
Updated at 110 PM CST Sat Jan 17 2026
- Freezing temperatures expected late tonight into Sunday morning
- Wind chill values 25-30 degrees inland and 30-40 degrees along the coast Sunday morning
- Freeze Warning in effect for inland areas in South Texas tonight
DISCUSSION
Issued at 110 PM CST Sat Jan 17 2026
High pressure settling into the area tonight with light winds will set the stage for radiational cooling. This should allow temperatures to dip below freezing (upper 20s to lower 30s) across inland areas of South Texas and just above freezing along the coast (mid to upper 30s). Confidence on exactly how low temperatures may get are still a little iffy as models are differing from the upper 20s to low 30s. Regardless of what the low temperature ends up being, it's going to feel cold as the sun rises Sunday morning. Wind chill values (feels like temperatures) are expected to drop into the 25-30 degree range inland and 30-40 degree range along the coast.
Therefore, there is a Freeze Warning or inland South Texas.
As we head into next week, temperatures rebound to near normal levels and hang around through mid-week before warm temperatures return late this week. A coastal trough is expected to develop Tuesday night and hang around through Wednesday before moving off to the northeast Wednesday night through Thursday. This feature will finally bring rain chances back to the forecast with low (25-35%)
chances Tuesday night increasing to medium (40-65%) Wednesday before dropping back to low Wednesday night. The best chances for wide spread rain across South Texas will be Tuesday night into Wednesday with rain chances Wednesday night sticking close to the coast.
Although rain chances will increase, it doesn't appear to be beneficial rain as storm total accumulations are expected to peak near 1".
AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 110 PM CST Sat Jan 17 2026
VFR conditions are expected throughout this TAF cycle with gusty winds this afternoon. Winds are expected to relax to under 10 knots tonight between 04-06z.
MARINE
Issued at 110 PM CST Sat Jan 17 2026
A strong northeast breeze will continue through tonight before dropping to moderate to fresh levels (BF 4-5) Sunday. Onshore flow returns Monday and hangs around through mid-week. Low chances for rain Tuesday will increase to medium to high (40-80%) chances Tuesday night through Wednesday night dropping back to low chances Thursday.
FIRE WEATHER
Issued at 110 PM CST Sat Jan 17 2026
While temperatures rebound back to near normal values, the drier air will linger through early next week. Critically low relative humidity values are expected Sunday with RH values Monday beginning to improve to the 25-35% range. By Tuesday, RH values should be above critical levels. Although winds will be light tomorrow, elevated fire weather conditions are expected once again as due to the critically low RH values and high Energy Release Component values in the 80-94th percentile.
