Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio TX 625 AM CDT Thu May 22 2025
New AVIATION
SHORT TERM
(Today through Friday)
Issued at 218 AM CDT Thu May 22 2025
Key Messages:
- Increased moisture brings elevated heat index values this afternoon.
- Low chances for isolated to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.
A mid to upper level short wave trough axis is moving across South Central Texas early this morning. Also, there is a mid level disturbance over eastern Mexico moving to the south and southwest according to latest images. Some of the elevated moisture (high clouds) is arriving across the Rio Grande and coastal plains with the help of the westerly winds aloft. Otherwise, low clouds are spreading across the coastal plains and this trend continues through late this morning. Overnight lows stay warm with 70s areawide.
After a cloudy start of the day this morning, partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies are expected for this afternoon. Today's highs range from the upper 90s across the Hill Country and parts of the I- 35 corridor to 100-103 along the Rio Grande. Heat index values are forecasted to range from 100 to 107 along and east of the I-35 corridor to 109 over the southern part of the Rio Grande. Therefore, stay hydrated and take breaks inside cooler areas if working outside.
In addition to the heat, there are low chances for showers and storms across portions of the Hill Country, southern Edwards Plateau, I-35 corridor, and coastal plains ahead of a weak frontal boundary that stays over the Hill Country mid to late afternoon into the evening. Also, an upper level short wave drops into the local area during the same time frame to enhance convective activity. Some storms could be strong to marginally severe (1 of 5 risks of severe thunderstorms) closer to the boundary which comes close to the southern Edwards Plateau. If the shower and storm activity develops, it should come to an end shortly after midnight tonight. Main hazards being strong to damaging wind gusts and large hail.
By Friday, the upper level flow stays from the north to northwest while at the surface, the prevailing flow comes from the southeast as a high pressure system over the central plains takes control over the region. No showers/storms are expected on Friday with dry and warm temperatures. Friday's high temperatures are forecasted to range from the mid to upper 90s across the Hill Country to 100-103 across the Rio Grande.
LONG TERM
(Friday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 218 AM CDT Thu May 22 2025
Key Messages:
- Above normal temperatures through the upcoming weekend.
- Rain chances return for early next week.
Weak mid-level ridging is in place over South Central Texas through the first half of the weekend. This pattern begins to break down Sunday as an upper trough moves across the western US towards the Central and Southern Plains, eventually bringing a cold front through our area around Monday night. Hot temperatures continue Saturday and Sunday with highs from the mid and upper 90s for most locations except along the Rio Grande where temperatures will be around 100 to 104 degrees. The first half of the holiday weekend looks dry before some precipitation chances return late Sunday and Monday due to upper level disturbances and the aforementioned cold front. High PWATS follow the front late Monday into Tuesday which alludes to the potential for some heavy rainfall, but details are still uncertain. Rain chances continue through the work week due to the passage of additional weak shortwaves, though rainfall would be more spotty in this mid-week pattern. Cooler temperatures in the 80s and 90s are seen Tuesday onward.

Isolated to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected across the Hill Country, I-35 corridor, and coastal plains late afternoon and early evening. Continued to mention -shra for the I-35 sites but hold off on mentioning thunderstorms since the probabilities are low at this time.
