SHORT TERM
(Tonight through Friday night)
Issued at 133 PM CDT Thu Oct 10 2024
Ridging aloft will continue to build over our area in the short term. A southerly lower level flow gradually returns bringing lower level moisture back across areas mainly east of I-35. However, this moisture is shallow and will mix out with heating keeping afternoon humidities low. Lack of temperature advection will keep highs well above average and lows near average. Subsidence under the ridging aloft and near to below average PWs keep rain out of the forecast and allow for mainly clear skies.
A well mixed airmass keeps minimum humidities low, in the upper teens to 20s percent. Winds of generally less than 10 mph can be expected. The lowest humidities and strongest winds with some gustiness will be across the Edwards Plateau. Fuels have become dry to critically dry due to ample sunshine and well above average high temperatures. Also, a few fires have been noted mainly east of I-35.
As a result, locally elevated fire weather conditions are possible most areas.
LONG TERM
(Saturday through Thursday)
Issued at 133 PM CDT Thu Oct 10 2024 0 Mid-level ridging gradually builds eastward into the state through this weekend and into Monday of next week. This keeps the string of above average afternoon highs in place with the hottest conditions forecast on Sunday and Monday when the ridge becomes most firmly established atop the region. The daily record highs could continue to be challenged and/or broken. With the light southerly flow, there will be some modest dew point recovery, especially southeast, each night but afternoons will continue to see dew points mix out with values falling into the upper 40s and 50s. Overnight lows will generally run seasonable as a result from the upper 50s across the Hill Country to the low to mid 60s elsewhere. Skies will remain mostly to completely clear through Monday.
An upper level system digging into and across the Great Lakes will establish troughing over the eastern CONUS for early to middle of next week. There remains some subtle differences within the medium range guidance regarding this pattern but enough energy looks to exist for a cold front to move through our region during sometime Tuesday. The core of the cooler airmass should remain well east of Texas but enough of this airmass arrives to allow for our daytime highs to trend at least closer to normal, if not slightly below, while the overnight lows dip into the low to mid 50s for many locations as well. While there could be an increase in some cloud cover with the front, the forecast stays rain free through the period. Northerly winds behind the front will otherwise help keep/reinforce the drier air that is in place.
