SHORT TERM
(This evening through Tuesday Night)
Issued at 324 PM CST Mon Dec 4 2023
High pressure reigns over the eastern half of Texas, and the the satellite certainly shows it with a lack of well...anything over virtually the entire area. The cirrus clouds that were overhead yesterday aren't far off, though, as they stream over our nearshore Gulf waters. Temperatures are pretty seasonable, sitting just over early December averages in the upper 60s to right around 70 degrees.
This specific center of high pressure looks to drift off to the east tonight - so winds may become a bit more easterly tonight, though we'll likely just see winds go slack as the boundary layer decouples. Of course, under a clear sky, with light winds and dry air, radiational cooling should be strong. Expect lows tonight in the upper 30s north and the 40s most everywhere else. The coast, moderated by Gulf waters in the lower 60s, should stay hung up in the 50s overnight.
Don't fret too much about this departed high pressure, though. A clipper moving from the Dakotas today through the Great Lakes tomorrow will clip us with the tail end of its cold front, then another high drops into the Great Plains behind it. Since clippers tend to be fast, weak, and shallow, we won't be expecting any impact way down here in Texas except for winds to back more towards northerly. There may be a slight bit of cold advection, but if there is anything, it will be outweighed by getting a day of full sun, so we should expect another day of highs in the upper 60s and low 70s and another similarly chilly night tomorrow night.
LONG TERM
(Wednesday through next Sunday)
Issued at 324 PM CST Mon Dec 4 2023
Surface high pressure will work its way into the area at the start of the period, leading to an upward trend in daytime temperatures.
Northeast winds will become southeasterly, which will contribute to these warmer temperatures as well as an increase in overall moisture. High pressure will move eastward towards the end of the week, with the next cold front approaching from the NW. With the uptick in moisture, should see our next shot at rain Friday night through early Sunday morning.
A little more on this cold front...Models are not in agreement on the timing of the front, which could make or break the intensity of the storms that are forecast to occur ahead of and along the front.
GFS is currently the fastest solution, with the front reaching the coast just afternoon. The Canadian and Euro models, on the other hand, bring the front to the coast later in the afternoon.
Why is this important? If the GFS solution plays out, the cold front would move through before peak daytime heating occurs and any capping in place would be less likely to erode in time. With the Euro & Canadian's time of arrival occurring later in the day, daytime heating would help destabilize the environment ahead of the front, and may give enough time for the cap to erode.
I say all of that to preface that SPC has a 15% chance of severe weather occurring along a line from College Station to Houston to just north of Galveston on Saturday. I would like to point out that this is Day 6, so the forecast is most certainly subject to change.
In any case, be mindful of the potential, and stay up to date with the forecast.
Temperatures through the week will be in the 60s to 70s. Friday and Saturday are set to be the warmest days of the week as temperatures reach into the 70s area wide, and some locations reach to just shy of 80F. Lows at night will be in the 40s to 50s through Thursday, with lows in the 50s to low 60s Friday night.

Mainly light northeasterly winds and low seas will persist through at least midweek, becoming southerly and increasing (seas rising too) by the end of the week. Winds could occasionally flirt with caution speeds.
Look for a cold front (and associated showers/storms) to move off the coast and through the area on Saturday with strong northwest winds and building seas in its wake (advisories will likely be needed).
