SHORT TERM
(Today through Thursday Night)
Issued at 305 AM CDT Wed May 21 2025

While temperatures will again climb into the upper 80s to low 90s today, drier conditions (especially north of I-10) will lead to today feeling much more comfortable compared to yesterday. Yesterday's slow-moving boundary stalled out in the near coast and is expected to meander south of I-10 through this afternoon before lifting back north ushering back in higher dewpoints across the area. Some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible along the boundary this morning through this afternoon thanks to daytime heating.

Overnight low temperatures tonight will be in the upper 60s to low 70s for much of the area, and then mid to upper 80s in the Houston Metro and along the coast. Thursday will see temperatures rise into the mid 90s for the majority of the region with areas west of the Brazos River rising into the upper 90s. The return of higher dew point temperatures will cause heat indices rising to near 100 degrees. Isolated coastal storms cannot be out-ruled Thursday afternoon as a weak sea breeze develops. Overnight low temperatures Thursday night will be similar to tonight, but add a degree or two.

LONG TERM
(Friday through Tuesday)
Issued at 100 AM CDT Wed May 21 2025

Southeast Texas will start the long term period with sunny to partly cloudy skies and highs generally in the lower to mid 90s inland and the upper 80s to lower 90s along the coasts Friday and Saturday as the mid-level ridge dominates the local weather pattern.

On Sunday, models continue to suggest PWs of 1.5" to 1.8" on Sunday, while upper-level ridge weakens and a few ripples in the flow pass overhead. Some models hint at Sfc CAPE of around 3,000 J/kg in and around the Brazos Valley and Piney Woods region, while the rest of the inland areas are closer to the 2,000 J/kg level for the late afternoon to early evening period. It also seems as a cold front could be on its way towards Southeast TX, which would provide some lift. This all could lead to showers and isolated thunderstorms for this timeframe, however, we may still have some influence from the mid-level ridge that day. Thus, I believe the locations with the best opportunity will be in that Brazos Valley/Piney Woods region.

The better set up for showers and thunderstorms still looks to occur Monday into Tuesday as the ridge weakens in response to an upper level trough moving across the Southern Plains. We could also have a few disturbances passing overhead as well the cold front passing through. Tonight's model runs look more in tune with bringing the cold front with highs possibly lowering into the upper 80s on Monday and the lower to upper 80s on Tuesday. After all the hot days we have had lately, I really hope we can get this "cool" chance for a more spring like day early next week.

AVIATION
(12Z TAF Issuance)
Issued at 619 AM CDT Wed May 21 2025

Generally VFR conditions will prevail through the day today with BKN to OVC CIGs around 4000-6000ft this morning that will scatter out by the late morning. A stalled boundary in the coastal waters this morning will meander closer to GLS/LBX over the next few hours leading to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms.
Can't out-rule a stray shower making it up to around HOU/SGR by the afternoon, but chances are too low to put in the TAF.

Winds (around 6-10kt) will gradually shift through the day: northeasterly winds this morning, easterly this afternoon, then southeasterly by this evening.

MVFR conditions will develop across the area between 07-09z with CIGs around 1500ft and patchy fog. There could be some temporary periods of IFR conditions at UTS and CXO near daybreak Thursday.

MARINE
Issued at 100 AM CDT Wed May 21 2025

Light VRB winds expected tonight as a weak cold front moves over the waters. East winds and seas of 2-4 feet are expected on Wednesday. Onshore flow returns late Wednesday and is expected to prevail through early next week. Winds could increase to moderate at times during the weekend and may lead to Caution flags as well as strong rip currents along the Gulf facing beaches. Chance for showers and thunderstorms may return late Sunday or early Monday and continue into next Tuesday as a cold front moves across Southeast TX.
