Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lake Charles LA 311 PM CDT Thu May 22 2025

New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, MARINE

KEY MESSAGES

- Mostly dry and warm days anticipated through Saturday, although isolated storms are possible along the sea breeze

- Rain chances begin to increase Sunday

- Unsettled weather returns next week with heavy rainfall and flash flooding threat for multiple days next week.

SHORT TERM
(Tonight through Saturday night)
Issued at 310 PM CDT Thu May 22 2025

A diffuse and gradually washing out boundary is near the coast this afternoon. With the boundary washing out and weak ridging building back into the area, moisture is slowly increasing once again. Also, a few showers have developed along the sea breeze in Acadiana.

Friday and Saturday the surface ridge will remain east of the area. The onshore flow that returns this afternoon will remain in place into the weekend. This will increase moisture and set the stage for higher rain chances in the extended.

Very weak ridging aloft will keep convection generally suppressed Friday and Saturday, however an isolated shower or storm can not be ruled out, but mainly along the sea breeze

LONG TERM
(Sunday through next Wednesday)
Issued at 310 PM CDT Thu May 22 2025

A series of short waves will move across the region during the extended and interact with a higher moisture content airmass.
Early next week PWATs may increase to around 1.6 to 1.9" or to around the 90th percentile. A frontal boundary may also move into the region, however it may only drift into the SE TX Lakes or into Cen LA by Tuesday. All this combined is expected to produce multiple days of stormy weather beginning Sunday into Monday.

While it is still very early, the current forecast thinking is on average 1 to 3 inches of rain early next week across the area.

AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1151 AM CDT Thu May 22 2025

Generally VFR conditions are anticipated through the period, however brief MVFR ceilings around 3KFT may occur this afternoon as the CU field develops in afternoon heating. Light and generally SE winds will occur this afternoon.

MARINE
Issued at 310 PM CDT Thu May 22 2025

Light and generally east winds are across the coastal waters this afternoon, but winds will veer more SE tonight into Friday as high pressure moves east of the area. Winds and seas will begin a modest increase late in the weekend. A light to moderate onshore flow is expected Sunday through early Tuesday.
