New AVIATION

SHORT TERM
(This evening through Wednesday night)
Issued at 322 PM CST Tue Dec 5 2023

A large upper trof over the eastern states amplifies further tonight before moving off into the western Atlantic on Wednesday. A large upper ridge over the western states meanwhile advances into the central states, then dampens while continuing into the eastern states on Thursday. A cold front approaching from the north moves through the forecast area tonight, but deep layer moisture remains too limited to support precipitation and have continued with a dry forecast with the frontal passage, and through Thursday as well.
Lows tonight will typically be around 40 except for the mid to upper 40s to the New Orleans metro area. Lows Wednesday night will tend to be mostly in the mid 30s except for lower to mid 40s over the New Orleans metro area, and some light frost will be possible in the colder locations. Highs on Wednesday will be mostly 55 to 60, then Thursday will typically see highs on 60 to 65. /29

LONG TERM
(Thursday through Monday night)
Issued at 322 PM CST Tue Dec 5 2023

A broad upper ridge continues across the eastern states through Friday night as an upper trof amplifies significantly while progressing from the northwest states into the central states. The upper trof continues into the eastern states over the weekend, and in the process an associated surface low brings a strong cold front through the forecast area Saturday night. A return flow is established on Thursday and precipitable water values look to increase to around 1.5 inches on Saturday just prior to the frontal passage. The 850 mb jet looks to increase to around 30 knots by Saturday afternoon and potentially reaches 40 knots immediately prior to the front moving through, which should result in sufficient shear to warrant concern for strong storms. However, despite the improving trend in deep layer moisture, model soundings look to be characteristic of a "tall, skinny cape" environment without lower level stretching potential and CAPE values overall look to remain limited. SPC does have the extreme northwest portion of the forecast area outlooked with a 15% risk area for Saturday through the frontal passage, and will continue to monitor for potential impacts over the forecast area. Will continue with a dry forecast on Thursday and Friday, then high rain chances follow for Saturday into Saturday night as the front approaches then moves through. Dry conditions develop Sunday and continue into Monday. /29

AVIATION
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 527 PM CST Tue Dec 5 2023

VFR conditions throughout the period with only broken high clouds noted on satellite. Winds will remain light and variable for the next 6 hours before increasing out of the north with the approaching cold front. LLWS between 0600-1200 UTC will impact terminals along and north of I-12 due to northerly flow at around 2kft of 35-40 knots. Winds will remain out of the north at or less than 10 knots through the remainder of the period.
