SHORT TERM
(Today through Friday)
Issued at 304 AM EDT Thu May 22 2025
Key Messages:
- Drier and somewhat cooler conditions are expected across the area on Thursday and Friday.
- Weather conditions will be benign, with only an isolated shower or two possible across the far north this morning.
The axis of a mid-level longwave trough as move to the east of Georgia while the cold front that advanced through the forecast area yesterday has moved well to the south. As a result, northwesterly flow has set up at the surface and aloft, allowing a drier and somewhat cooler airmass to settle in over much of the Southeast. A weak shortwave traversing the upper flow could lead to an increase in clouds, and perhaps an isolated chance of showers, in far north Georgia this morning. Limited low level moisture should keep any other impacts to a minimum before the disturbance moves away by the afternoon. Dewpoints in the 50s (and even 40s in the highest elevations) and mostly clear skies will he a comfortable change from the recent humid conditions. Low temperatures will start the morning from the mid 50s to low 60s, while high temperatures will rise into the 70s across the far northern tier, low 80s around the I-20 corridor, and mid to upper 80s in central Georgia. Winds will be a bit gusty today in our post frontal environment. Northwesterly winds between 10-15 mph could gust as high as 25 mph at times.
Conditions are expected to be similar on Friday, although winds will be a bit lighter as surface high pressure settles into the region.

LONG TERM
(Friday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 304 AM EDT Thu May 22 2025
Key Messages:
- Generally calm with temperatures slowly climbing.
- Little to no PoPs besides some isolated thunderstorms in far north Georgia through the weekend. Potential for more widespread thunderstorms next week.
The upper level trough will be well on its way out of the CONUS by the start of the long term. Upper level riding builds in and stays through the weekend with mid level flow initially dry from the northwest as the mid level trough is slower to move out of the area.
Conditions moisten as the ridge develops and vertically stacks, bringing highs around 90 for much of the area by Sunday. Once again we are watching for the terminus of the ridge to be located over the northern CWA, helping to initiate afternoon thunderstorms by late weekend as PWATs increase to near 1.5". Widespread precipitation is not anticipated through at least next week though, due to sinking air from the sfc high to the south.
Our next chance for thunderstorms will come next week as an upper level trough descends from the north and pushes against the southern ridge. Timing remains uncertain with this front, however given potential moisture and heating a few storms next week could become strong. The presence and influence of any shear remains uncertain with this system, but will rely on the timing and intensity of the incoming wave.
